WTF? Driver 93 Rolls Through Toll With Pedestrians Body In Windshield

OMFG

Driver, 93, Rolls Through St. Petersburg Tollbooth With Body Embedded in Windshield

ST. PETERSBURG -- A 93-year-old driver apparently suffering from dementia fatally struck a pedestrian, then continued driving through a toll booth with the man's body on his windshield, police said.

Ralph Parker of Pinellas Park drove for 3 miles Wednesday night after striking the 52-year-old pedestrian with his gold 2002 Chevrolet Malibu, severing the man's right leg, police said.

A toll taker on the Sunshine Skyway saw the body stuck through Parker's windshield and notified police, Traffic Homicide Investigator Michael Jockers said.

Authorities did not identify the pedestrian.

Parker was hospitalized overnight with minor scrapes, and was expected to be taken to an elder care facility, Jockers said.

Charges were not likely to be filed, because Parker did not appear to know what had happened, where he was nor the correct date, said Bruce Bartlett, chief assistant in the Pinellas-Pasco County State Attorney's Office.

``He may have somewhere in his mind have realized it was a crash, but immediately forgot about it,'' Jockers said.

Police took Parker's license, which he renewed in 2003.

``That was the one thing he had, to get in his car and just drive for the sheer enjoyment of driving,'' Jockers said. Parker lived alone after his wife died in 1998, according to authorities.

A spokesman for the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said the agency would conduct its own inquiry into whether Parker, who otherwise had a clean driving record, should have had a license.

Seniors age 80 or older must pass only a vision test when renewing a Florida driver's license.

When you turn 80 is when you should no longer be allowed to drive.

All these senior seniors are on meds, can't see well, can't hear well, can't respond fast enough even if they can see well, can't turn their heads, drive like molasses, and are a complete hazard to everyone else.

From all my decades of driving, even though younger kids are supposed to be the most dangerous, I've had way more close calls with old fuckers nearly hitting me or causing an accident.

BAN THEM!

I agree, they worry about drunks on the road, but I see on a daily basis in Florida multiple accidents caused by some crazy, blind, high, delusional senior citizen that "just didn't see someone" in their blind spot. I ride a motorcycle from time to time and I've seen death in the face riding anywhere near old farts.

They should be tested twice a year and be pulled over for suspicion. They should be charged for imaired driving just as they'd charge a DUI.

I saw an old fart drive right into a young guy on a motorcycle a couple years ago. He didn't even seem to realize the motorcycle was in front of him nor what he did and just kept driving as if nothing happened. The motorcylce guy went airborne into the sidewalk.

These old drivers are like ticking bombs on the roadways.

seems shitty to lock the old man up , but i can't believe he didnt know what was going on.. if he could drive and find his way back home ( i.e. owned a car , filled it with gas etc ) he knows what was going on..

Maybe if he jumped into someone else's car or something..

sorry but as long as they lock peopkle up for public intoxication, i am sure every citizen that pays to drive legally would support keeping people like this off the road.

Actually the older folks can get bizarre memory failures.

My mother who is in her 70's still has a great mind, but sometimes when I've called her during the week, I'll call again a few days later and she'll completely not remember we talked a few days before.

This is exactly why I sold my motorcycle and probably won't buy another one as long as I live down here. On top of that alot of the older drivers down here all seem to have big Caddys, Lincolns or CrownVics...

the court system is fucked enough...florida would would go out of business trying to put away every old fuck who finally lost their mind. Pack his ass up and send him away to an old folks home...he's probably just a heartbeat away from a nice, long dirtnap anyway.

Dementia affects different people's memory in different ways. I'll bet most people on this board have a relative or family friend over 70 with some form of dementia. If he knew what was going on he would have stopped to help the guy or pushed him off the windshield and drove off.

The problem is twofold:

Florida saying you are ok to drive if you are over 80 as long as you pass your eyesight test and the fact that he wasn't under some kind of care if his disease had progressed that much.

After the age of 65 driving tests should be administered yearly to validate competency behind the wheel.

In DeathRace 2000 Sly Stallone and David Carradine plowed their death machines through handicapped and elderly victims.

In DeathRace 2005 the elderly and handicapped turn the tables, are given licenses to kill, and plow through crowds, Burger Kings, and pedestrians. Coming soon to a street near you.

Well unless they are from Okinawa, those people that reach that age are generally in 100% better shape than our demented over medicated aged population
