every last 1. i figure them 2 be spam. you would think that all webmasters would be smart enuff to announce "hey im from this and want to do this, this isnt spam" but it seems alot dont
whenever I hit up someone I've not spoken to before (or for a while) I'll usually introduce myself and ask how they are.. and wait for a response - I don't want to type an essay and find that that message didn't make it through
ICQ's a funny thing - I get SO many Turkish and Indian guys trying to 'chat' to me it's unreal - but cos I never know who's who I just accept everyone and then ignore/delete if it turns out they're a surfer or spammer - but I'd not close a window if they just said 'hello' unless I knew for sure that they weren't involved in this industry - ynever know where the next bout of great traffic is gonna come from - so why turn down a potential opportunity if it doesn't hurt you to respond?

I don't - normally I add them to my list, say hello back & ask what I can do for them. Since my comp is on 24hrs, 99% of the time it's from a foreign webmaster who has questions before joining but wants to make sure I'm there before they write.
I say hello back followed with a "how can I help you". 9 times out of 10 it is a legit webmaster or potential webmaster with a question. And if it isn't, the delete and ignore buttons work great

A group of us were talking about this once at some show, I think you were there. I answer all of them but Goddamn is it annoying. What really bothers me is when somebody is from a different part of the world, they know we're in different time zones, yet they don't leave a message. We then continue the conversation over the next 3-4 days.
Please people, leave a message! I use ICQ as an answering machine, it saves both parties a lot of time.

i hate that shit. one of the guys i work with has a bad habit of just saying "Sup?" then disspearing for a half an hour.
i get text messages like that all the time too. i don't feel like playing 20 questions to figure out wtf you want. combine two sentences, it's easy. look.
"What's up? I had a question about [Insert Topic here]"
see, there you go, your greeting, and your reason for contacting me all in on simple little line.

"Hey, I'm one of your affiliates, was wondering if I could get a password?"
Short, pretty, to the point, and sweet. Just like me.

I get that on Skype -- either wanting to flirt or practice English. So many and so annoying that I've started ignoring most Skype calls. Unless I know you and know you're calling, I think you should do a text chat intro before you do voice. Maybe I'm picky.
