Control Panel for your Server(s)?

This is a question for you GFY?ers that push lot of bandwidth.

What control panel do you use?

I would assume most of you do not use a control panel at all, because most of them seem to bog the server down by using up valuable resources. I know some of you would just like to focus on marketing your business and not be bogged down with managing you server(s).

So as I see it you have two options:

1.) Use a control panel like see cPanel, Plesk, Ensim.
2.) Let your hosting company manager server.

I'm just wondering if there is a market for a third option? A control panel that does not run your server yet allows you to have full control and is completely secure?

Regards,

Anthony

My advice is no one would buy it. That's because if you want people to buy things you need to come up with something unique.. not just a different option.

A control panel that does not run your server yet allows you to fully control your server that is completely secure?

Is that not unique?

I personally do not use control panels as they tend to be more hassle than they are worth, but the other day I ran across http://www.cubepanel.com/?source=1
while looking for something else.

Why would anyone want to do that ?
Especially that you're talking about big bandwidth pushers.
Its not like they add a domain/mysql/e-mail everyday
its a job done once and everything else (maintenance and shits)
can't be done by a control panel.

darksoul,

I know you are a systems administrator, but some operators would just like to focus on marketing there business and not be bogged down with managing server(s).

darksoul,

What if some intelligence was bulit into the control panel to monitor parameters and could send alerts of things that needed to be maintained?

I agree that no control panel could replace a good system operator, but could be used as a tool to more efficiently manage a server(s).

Exactly.
But if they're small fish they use cpanel.
If they're big they have their sysadmins
No need for yet another control panel.

I use www.directadmin.com and I'm very pleased with it. ;)

cPanel sucks compared to this one, I've used cPanel before. Way to slow down a server.

CPanel is great if you have the time to set it up properly and maintain it properly... 90% of people who use CPanel don't.. and that's exactly why they are using it in the first place.

I'm with you xfalmp, directadmin is like a dumbed down bug free version of cpanel. It works great but doesn't have as many "wow" features as cpanel does.

So if you're a virtual/reseller host your best bet is cpanel with proper administration. If you're hosting all of your own sites go with directadmin.

darksoul,

Yes, but I believe it is important for small fish to be able to utilize their servers 100% and get the most for there money out of the server. Other wise it just might take longer for them to become a big fish.

And what about medium fish?

The Drzes HMS blows all other CP's out of the water. It doesn't need a clean system install, puts a lower load on the server than Cpanel and Plesk, has automated setups, has INTEGRATED billing (unlike Cpanel where you have to buy Modernbill), and even works for the average joe webmaster.

Nothing else holds a candle... check out the demo and see for yourself... www.drzes.com

I use plesk on my reseller server.

I have alot of resellers which keep me alive. Support ticketing built in and a bunch of feel good options that make my resellers sell better.

I'm not saying it's the best but it serves its purpose. As far as security, I know all my resellers and they know it is supposed to be a super clean server. I don't resell to porn sites and I restrict some features (unless they pay extra) to keep everything clean. It's actually a good selling point. Alot of my clients find me because they had problems because their last host let someone on that network that effected the entire server.

At one point I wanted to accept anyone, however, i ran into some problem makers early on. Lucky for me it didn't effect my business and i was able to let them go without hostility. Unless I have a large staff of administrators and possibly a custom script, i'm going to keep it small and elite and charge extra for it.

[end of novel]

on our adult stuff we don't use any control panels, just plain RedHat, but on non adult stuff we have some servers running Ensim and it is a good package, especially if you are running many domains on one server.

Yes, compared to see Cpanel I would say that directadmin is a better choice, simply because it doesn't control the whole server, but directadmin lacks many features itself.

Just curious E5hosting. You don't seem to own your OWN IP? But verio does? Or am I wrong?

Example

Ohio - Cleveland - Webair Internet Development Inc
New York - New York - Isprime Inc

e5
Colorado - Englewood - Verio Inc

Actually, no it wasn't. It was made by FAD Solutions, a NY company. Do a whois on www.Drzes.com and www.e5hosting.com and see what it says. Do a little HW before you say stuff like that. Just because e5 is one of the hosting companies using it doesn't mean they made it.

Why do you have to own your own IP's? The difference is that e5 is located in a Verio DC that would BLOW AWAY Webair's DC. It also allows anomity for resellers or dedicated customers.

I can't find anywhere that he said e5 made the Drzes HMS. Only reason I am jumping in here is because there are a lot of hosts that use the Drzes HMS and I know one of the creators on a personal level.

JuicyMonkey,

e5hosting.com did not write the DRZES HMS nor do they own it.

You are mistaken there.

I think he just started a topic on control panels in general.

If you're interested in the DRZES HMS contact me and I'll give you a special price. :)
