OK I hear all this stuff about Cogent bandwidth lately. The thing is the only people saying good things are the newbie hosts that are trying to spam their new hosting companies that are all using it. Is this because thats all they can afford??...I don't see any of the Big established Hosts Like Candid, Techie Media, IsPrime, Stynk,etc... using it?? I'am guessing that they know what the real deal is with cogent. It just seems to strange that NO established Hosts use it, it's always just the smaller newbie hosts ot the hosts that failed on real bandwidt go to it??..so whats the deal??..
Cogent Bandwidth ?

You gave answers in your question while your topic has a questionmark. Pretty ironic don't you think? From when quality, price and technology started having ratio models?
currently i use 2 hosts, both of them use cogent. I'll refer the one of them which we have for about 9 months, because the other in 4 months or so has if i'm right 0min downtime. The overall downtime of [hosts name removed] is less than 20min. Now go make a search on this board for the hosts you posted and you'll see plenty topics about it ;)
Bottom line, who are behind your servers is the most important and the one that makes the difference. I'm not the one that jumps here through times crying for my host.Last edited by Theo; 03-07-2002, 04:12 PM.Comment

Florida T , thanks for the info
Lude Dude, i will agree that at times when I do some tests Cogent does seem ok, but it's not the downtime I hear thats bad it's the connectivity around the world that sucks. They don't reach all of the world, and when you ping them from most places their are far more hops then on most of the big providers?

Well, again spekaing from my own personal experience, I've never seen faster ping times from any place I trace than I have since moving to my current provider.
As far as I know, from research, Cogent is peered with major providers worldwide. I have someone hosting with me who lives in Europe. His ping responses are 50% faster i.e., twice as fast, as they were before when he was using a major host on fat pipe from Level 3.
Anything else I tell you would be conjecture, and I won't play that game. I can only report my personal experiences with 5 dedicated servers and a good amount of pipe used on a monthly basis. I'm not losing money by being fed by Cogent's network.

Cogent is not totally bad, but some of their peering points are oversubscribed so you get slower access speeds depending totally on where you are trying to access from. With this in mind it's possible that a cogent-using-company based in Toronto could be faster than one in California. Downtime is not the issue with them but speed is, again, depending on where you are accessing from.
Soul Rebel is completely right about the hosting company is more important than the provider. All bandwidth providers are million or billion dollar companies. They have the money to fix what needs fixing if possible.
Would you rather go with a hosting company that has the resources and know how to take care of you or the hosting company run by a kid with a pipe in his dad's company's office?
Fortunately I found a company that gives me close to cogent prices but on a grade a network that is used for one of the largest Voice over IP networks in the world! ICQ me and I'll give you the info ICQ# 152970595I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

To all fuckfaces that use Cogent, a question:
How much bandwidth does the total internet use it Gbps?
20 maybe 30Gbps...
ok, now multiply that by what Cogent sells bandwidth for about $30/Mbps?
30,000 x $30 = $900,000
So, basically you can run the whole internet on $900,000 per month? LOLOLOLOLOL
Sounds like a plan to me... They just bought PSI.net another bankrupt company because thier business model failed, as it was supposed to.
Verio is soon to follow.

The fact of the matter is cogent is not a viable long-term company, and has some definite peering issues.
Their entire business strategy is to get enough bandwidth usage to *force* the major ISP's into peering with them. Unfortunately for cogent, big ISP's don't like attempts at being bullied, so are refusing to upgrade any of the allready-in-place peering Cogent has (a lot of which were aquired via the netrail buyout).
Cogent is purchasing PSInet almost solely for it's peering agreements, as they are in some serious trouble in some areas. They can't sustain their business plan by paying for IP transport in any capacity, so they MUST keep peering going to stay viable.
Even if they DO pull off the peering thing, good luck. The last piece I read about them when I was doing research, is they currently had ~$400mil in on-hand cash (not including debt of course) with a quarterly burn rate of over 35 million. The piece also stated that even if Cogent meets it's sales targets (which it wont), the total revenue accounts for like 5% of the operating costs.
Yeah. Great fucking company to be hosted with. This is why we don't use them, we'll pay more elsewhere on a quality network that has good peering strategy, rather than having to scramble for new space when cogent goes belly up in a year or whatnot.
Of course, Cisco may bail them out for a while. I can see one of two things happening. Either A. they go bankrupt. or B. they start charging what it costs them to provide the service.
If B. happens, they have a poor IP network compared to other backbone providers, so what's the point of using them?
Now, that said I say take advantage of the situation as it is. Use them, but don't COUNT on them. Our plan now is to just buy a cogent line when it's viable for us, and BGP with them and our current provider (using our current providers address space, of course). That way, if cogent dies, who the fuck cares, and we can compete at the insane below-cost price level everyone seems to go to regardless of service quality these days.
In short, Cogent is selling below cost in hopes of gaining enough market share to return to profitability at a future date. This is the same reason wal-mart is despised by many small communities. But think wal-mart that runs other companies out of business, but then later on goes out of business itself.
Either way, single-homed cogent bandwidth is a BAD deal for hosting any sites you care about. Movie gallery shit, etc. it's fucking great for though. Take advantage while you can!
Of course, I'll get attacked by hosts that just started up 5 months ago telling me I'm all wrong and Cogent r0x0rs. But oh well, time will tell. I've been hosting back when CHEAP bandwidth was considered $1/MB (yes, Megabyte), and until cogent, have always been able to be price competetive. It's coming down to I get to provide shittier service to my customers to keep a viable business going and I just detest that.

BoneProne, just to add my 2 cents for Techie , I have a few sites with them and they seem to be some decent people. Way back when they started they had some growing pains for a month, but thats long over with. I have been with them several months and have not 1 bad thing to say. Prices are very good, tech support decent, but their network is rock solid...I think They Host Lightning Free & Smutserver, and some other major players??..not 100% sure, but I would give them a whirl if your really looking.Comment

My host is multi-homed and if Cogent drops, I get routed over the other pipes available. Of course, if they go belly up, then I'll be renegotiating my b/w rates based on whatever pipe will become my primary. And, yes, my address space is with the host's existing allocation, so I don't lose my IP space that I pay for.
I'm cheap, not stupid. So far, I've been right.

I think Cogent bandwidth is excellent for all you TGP guys. We all know how hard it can be to convert that traffic. And if you get listed on any of the big TGP's you can burn a ton of bandwidth. If your looking for cheap bandwidth and you submit galleries Cogent is a great alternative.

OK, first off, the Internet does not run on 30 GBps. What kind of bullshit is that? Our max throughput so far has been 1.6 GBps and I know we do not push 1/30 of teh Internet traffic.
Second, most large adult hosts have Cogent and if they dont admit it, then they are lying. I actually have a list of the companies who purchased and use Cogent bandwidth and I can begin listing names if they want me to. Cogent is a good purchase for any adult web masters.
And to Bash, I do have money to pay my rent for the next 3 months, and I could also pay yours with a ll of the money I have saved. Why dont you come up with something intelligent and post it on this thread.Comment

ludedude has it right, that's the service we're planning on providing as soon as possible. We'll offer a couple different services probably, something like "cogent only, you're fucked if cogent dies, but it's cheap!" then "cogen with BGP backup for small outages, but you get to re-negotiate what you pay to our normal rates should cogent go bye bye for a long time", and then "full access to best-path routing", which of course would be the best option for "quality" bandwidth.
Of course, this all requires money, which takes a while for small niche providers to come up with. ;) Nevermind the technical expertise with 99.9999% of all the little porn hosts popping up don't even come CLOSE to having. Gotta love the kids thinking they can run full BGP feeds and "engineer" a fault taulerant network with their one router.
At least we have the latter area covered (not by me, I don't even come close to professing to being a BGP/internet routing guru), but the first one is our problem.
As for the other hosts using cogent, I don't see the problem? I'm guessing it would just be one of many connections into a BGP feed, in which case it's fine, even if they wieght the link more than the others. As long as the speed is there, and they use best-path for the direct peers of their ISP's does it really matter? If sites were being slow, and shit was going down you would have a right to bitch though. Also if the providers blatantly lie about it, then there would be a problem as well. *shrug* When/if we get cogent bandwidth, you bet your ass our "premium" customers who pay for the best peering available will also have access to that cogent pipe. I guess we do disclose a hell of a lot more about how our network is designed and ran than other providers though.

I've been a long time "tier 1" supporter.. but.. here is the deal
We personally use VERIO bandwidth and I know the guys at ISPRIME, LIKEWHOA, etc..and they use Tier 1 providers.. but.. there is a market for COGENT.!
Cogent is cheap, provides "good enuf" connectivity that the TGP webmaster can use.. there is a market for this bandwidth whether you believe it or not.
I'm not here to argue whether a webmaster should or shouldn't use Cogent... All I'm saying, is there is a market for it and i'm providing it.. get my point? It's a niche market just like probaby what your involved with..
The bottomline is, if the webmaster want's .70/Gig on cogent so be it.. I'll give it to them with the the best customer service you can get in the hosting biz.
I wouldn't host a critical website on Cogent but I would DEFINITELY host TGP, FREEHOSTS, MOVIEPOSTS, and CJ sites on Cogent...Your STUPID if you don't..
USE COGENT for as long as they are around, if they die tomorrow who cares.. there are a bazillion hosts out there for your biz..
USE COGENT WHILE YOU CAN!

run a Paysite or Corporate presence on it.
As far as an "outrageous amount for such a small performance increase."
You have to be kidding me.
AT&T and UUNet have Global networks... Many other of the Major Tier-1 Providers are established and dont look like they mabey pulling the plug tommorow... Global Networks, private peering arrangements with other Tier-1 Providers on fast private Networks, AT&T and UUnet have some of the best Techs there are.
Cogent only has peering arangements on Congested Public peering points, and minimal private peering...
There is a huge difference...Comment

Cogent is not a stable company in our opinion. We do not like their financials and most importantly the business model. Our company does not push a bit of our bandwidth through Cogent, unless requested by a client.
We do have ample Cogent connectivity, but it is being sold separately, on separate routers, etc.
Those interested in Cogent can contact us and we will be able to review your applications ([email protected])
Hope that helps

Cogent isn't bad for what it is. And the bottom line is that its cheap. You always get what you pay for! Its like the difference between buying a honda civic and a bmw/mb/any other high end car. But as someone pointed out earlier, it all depends on who's running your servers and the routers on the hosts end. I know a bunch of poeple that do make a good living running their sites and hosts of cogent bw w/o problems. The other thing is cogent has the 60:40 push/pull ratio (eventhough they say it they dont really look into that much with 100mbit lines, mostly gigE). The funnies thing was yesterday i was talking to someone and they told me they getting bandwidth at "wholesale prices" paying 1500 for 10mbit of cogent
, all i can say is that i want more clients like that.
. Also, from speaking with the rep from cogent, i asked them about being funded by cisco, and he claimed that they have an "arrangement" with cisco that they only purchase their equipment, and they are not funded by them. I personally don't believe him but what ever. At the same time, i heard of alot of people being very satisfied with cogent. But same as you always back up all your work, You should always have a backup for your bandwidth, whether its premium bandwidth or cogent bandwidth or what ever the case maybe. Because the fact of the matter is, even premium bandwidth providers do have problems occasionaly.
Ok, i said my peice

Cogent is not funded per-se by cisco. They got a rather large "credit line" or somesuch strange loan arrangement in the area of $450mil, which was extended ~100mil a while back (IIRC, of course).
Essentially, cisco loaned them a buttload of money and in return almost all of it goes back into buying cisco gear. Cogent is one of cisco's largest high-end customers I believe.
But, the fact remains you cannot sell bandwidth for what cogent sells at, and remain profitable. Even if they owned the internet and all bandwidth was 100% free to them, that cost does not even cover fiber leases+equipment+personell, not even close. They do make better margins off leased lines to corporations (i.e. seattle HQ is connected to Wash DC HQ via high-speed fibre), but that market is saturated anyways and the only way for them to gain business is by deeply undercutting the competition.
It's like the saying "If the only way for you to be in business is to sell for less than your competition, then you should not be in business."
