I agree. there is a time and a place. if you are at a convention or a local entrepreneaur group and the dress is suppose to be a suit and you show up in sweat pants ... i don't expect to be granted any courtesies. why should they, i didn't extend any to them showing up like i did. But those are just first impressions ... once I tell them what I do ... then I deserve some respect. If they don't give it then... they are an "asshole in a suit".

I admit it has its time and place, I would probably get less looks like I am a criminal when trying to conduct business if I wore suits. But I have found in general that with enough money, people will do business with you regardless if you are wearing a sack cloth poncho or a 4 thousand dollar suit.

That's true if there is a company that is smaller than you that wants to do business with you. But when you are trying to swing a deal with somebody a helluva lot bigger than you are. Let's say they invite you out to dinner ... wouldn't you dress as you expect they would? they say - "hey by the way we're going to a place that expects a jacket and tie" That's an appropriate time and place.

you own suits... but you don't seem to be on too much of a power trip. But you do own expensive suits - and the Armani name isn't all about the cut. It's got a lot of cache' and power issue behind it.

I dont trust people in suits. They are wearing them for a reason, they are trying to influence something or someone.

I wear them at weddings and funerals. I wont go to any other kind of function that requires a suit. Why? If an event or business meeting requires a suit, its gonna be filled with assholes. Assholes in suits.

That's fine. it can be about influencing people. go easy on some of us ... cuz like i said earlier some of us do it to influence ourselves and like TaDoW and you both said ... they can be worn out of respect for those around you ... at weddings, a dinner with a girl friend, dinner with a client at a nice restaraunt... or whatever. a suit doesn't make you an arrogant asshole ... that's the man in the suit. And there are just as many of us wearing blue jeans and talking about how guys in suits are worthless pieces of shit.

alright. i'm moving on to a less interesting thread now...

Ok, I am going to have to ammend that statement. Not that they are always 100% homosexual... sometimes they are just straight guido assholes.

I dont mind a nice business suit, I like that my banker wears one. But when someone is in a suit that costs almost as much as a cheap Japanese import, and is just out drinking... he just looks like a schmuck. Or a homo. That is not class imho.

So in conclusion.

Normal business suit on mortgage banker or lawyer = good.
5k dollar suit on 32 year old stock broker out drinking, shooting pool, driving Porsche = bad. Either gay or a jerkoff.

Right on.

It really just depends on the person, not the clothes. If you're cool, and you wear suits that cost five large, you're cool. If you're a prick, and wear suits that cost five large, you're still a prick.

So wear whatever tickles your twinkie. Feel good about it, and let everyone else do the same. I say evolve, and let the chips fall where they may.

I'm pretty sure I know where labret is going with this.... not really meaning disrespect, or to insult anyone (of us) necessarily... but rather to explain that a misused suit can quickly make you look like a total dipshit.
