Who knows if Wal-Mart knew they were getting a service provider that hired illegals, but someone there probably put one and one together.

There's actually a fairly well known political figure in my state who campaigns against illegal immigration, yet signs cleaning services for his business that hire illegals so he can save a buck.

I know the owner of a service who did work for him for over 5 years, and then got a call one day saying another service (known to hire illegals) was willing to do it for just $20 per visit and asked if he could match that offer. You factor in the cost of legal labor, supplies, etc... He KNEW he was getting a cleaning service with illegals. The bottom line here is that a couple of Americans lost their jobs in just that one incident.

Sure, I don't deny that.

The point I was making is that the average schmoe just doesn't matter.

It all comes down to the code word of 'small government'. It doesn't mean what people think it means. Small Government does not mean small, efficient governmental oversight of things that need oversight-ing... Small Government is the code word for CHEAP LABOUR.

Look at all the things that 'conservatives' have fought against: Minimum wage laws, social security, OSHA regulations, universal health care... you name it. If it involves giving money to poor people to bring them up, chances are its either been gutted, subverted, or actively being done currently with the excuse of government trying to be a "Nanny State". Why? Because poor people are desperate people, and desperate people are CHEAP LABOUR. You hear nary a peep out of them when billions get dumped to bail out savings + loans, or dropped on Bechtel and Halliburton in no-bid contracts.

In any economic downturn, the xenophobic nature of people will come out to play in the people hurt the most. "Kick out all the illegals" they'll say. "There's not enough work for us, why should we give up our jobs?" In the end though, that attitude will HURT more than help.

Hire 'entitled' non-illegals to fill those roles and there'll be never-ending agitation for higher wages, more benefits, safer conditions et al. The Cheap Labour crew will cry out "Profitability is down! We cannot compete against cheaper foreign labour pools! We must (get massive corporate welfare|get lax regulations|outsource|move our factories overseas)!"... and of course, they'll get it, because it's their game. Welfare will just suck out more tax dollars from the system (or require more borrowing), relaxing regs will put workers (and possibly the average citizen) at risk of injury or death, outsourcing will cost more of the higher-paying local jobs, and moving facilities will cost ALL the local jobs.

And as the bad times wear on, it won't just be illegals. Next it'll be legal minorities: blacks, hispanics, asians, et al. The last time a serious economic downturn happened, a "war on drugs" which was (and remains) a thinly veiled policy of institutionalized racism was enacted. Drugs were used as a 'hook' to clean out 'workspaces'... anti-opium laws removed the chinese man from the assembly line, anti-cocaine laws assured that every black man would "fly into a cocaine rage and be invulnerable to bullets" (for real!), anti-marijuana laws to fuck the latino (who, back in the day, apparently had a massive love for the herb, vis. La Cucharacha). I wonder what'll happen next time? Probably just wipe out any and all social spending and build an industry on incarcerating the inevitable criminal upsurge.

The only certainty is that Cheap Labour will get what they want: an increasingly indebted, pliable workforce to squeeze profits from. The problem being that they'll push down and exploit naturalized citizens just as readily as exploit already-down illegals. :2 cents:
