We just got back from Mass in a Mexican Church

    It was awesome.

I haven't been to Mass in .. 25 - 26 years which was long before I dropped Christianity.

Now I realize how close they are to Witchcraft in their ceremonies and rituals. The priest did parts of the service in Latin, it was amazing from an educational point of view, the rituals are riveting.

I have Witness friends who actually refer to Catholics as Witches and none of my explanation to them makes any difference.

And no, I don't take communion.

There is also a lot of Santeria here which is sort of a hybrid between Catholicism and Voodoo. It's pretty interesting, I've read on it from time to time but I'm not clear how this strain of religion got here.

I find those little brown mexicans (well church goers in general) to be spectacularly unintelligent. Any of them there witness to any other virgin mary piss wall sightings?

First of all, a 'spick' doesn't and never has referred to a Mexican, it is a derogatory name for a Puerto Rican, secondly, we live in Mexico...how bout you shut up now.

A major reason why Catholicism grew so rapidly and swamped out earlier doctrinal rivals to become a monolithic institution was its eagerness to incorporate existing 'pagan' belief systems and philosophies. At its most obvious, whenever a new region was converted to Catholic christianity, the regions gods and deities were recast as local patron saints. At its most fundamental, Catholicism unhesitatingly swapped core beliefs for contemporary beliefs that were very prevalent and accepted--for example: the Greek idea of the duality of the soul and body and the permanence of the former.

One example of that 'folk christianity" practice is the yearly festival held yearly in almost every catholic country including Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Philipines, and Venezuela.

Festivals honoring not just the Christian saints and patrons but also those Gods and Goddesses worshipped by these people long before Christianity came always get the support of the country's religious sector.

True. Good term for it... "folk" christianity. It's very interesting to see the contrast between areas colonized by English protestants and those by Spanish catholics.

Unlike other cities in Mexico, Cancun is not a typical catholic community. There are few churches, I only know of two (catholic) and there are over a half million people here. As a matter of fact, you never would have known the pope died unless you saw it on the news. No big ta-do about it at all.

Being very non christian and very very pagan, I was relieved to NOT feel so out of place at the mass. It was like I was at home doing a ritual or spell......
