If the EU starts that shit.. and they feel they have an alleged cause to do so, (ie why is ICANN still a subcontractor of the US govt and assumes upon itself factors that influence other nations?), the chances are all other nations will be supporting this - simply because they are not currently being represented. It's basically an "OK, let's play, but not while you insist hogging the ball 100% of the time".

Only nation to lose is the US - they rest can only gain. A graceful mediation may be relevant where nobody has to "lose" anything and we can all have peace and earn some money without more pathetic diversions.

This is a bluff and probably said by some idiot who doesn't have a clue.

First, this would kill businesses and hurt everyone's economy. As much as other countries want control of the net, they simply have no choice. This may not be what you want to hear, but it's the truth. Everyone will suffer.

As for who I think should control it, the US. It's not really a pride thing or the fact I'm American. We built it and we should be able to choose who controls it. It would be like building a really popular site and having someone come by and say "Well we should allow some other people to control it to be fair".

Either way, who gives a shit who controls it?

Not only that.. But it gives the United States a measure of control over the economies of other nations that have come to depend on the net. There are two ways to seize control of another country. The first is by force and the second is by controling their economy.

Just look at canada for an example. It is sooo fucking controlled by the United States that when an american farts a canadian says "excuse me."

No comparison to any site. If the US wants to have the benefits of trading internationally and use other countries as an arm via the net - they obviously have to agree on "something". It's that simple. The choice, (not that it's even on the cards), is that other countries group and form their own DNS authority - not exactly difficult.

no. Bush and his admin are the biggest fuckups in this story. The UN tried to use a normal approach but the US mobsters had to fuck it up.... again. Its a shame the elephants (US) in the porcelain closet (the world) have the most power.

I always wondered about these claims (kinda like Al Gore stuff) that the "US invented the net" :-) Along with Berners-Lee, much of this was done in Bern, Switzerland.
