Is the war on porn our own fault?

I'm not pointing fingers at anyone. I'm asking a question. Our industry keeps getting "harder" and pushing more boundaries. That's fine. Consenting adults should be able to do what they want and view what they want.

BUT when we take this very hard content and give it away free on sites that are easy for children to access, is it any wonder the government decides to crack down?

Just a question. I'm just not surprised. We keep pushing and pushing. Things are now starting to break.

No.. it's the irresponsible parents mixed with ignorant government officials who try to run the country based on their own personal religious beliefs.

In my opinion this business screwed itself from day one, the more free stuff pple wanted, the more free stuff they got!

And in soo many ways the business is just reaping what it sowed!

I would have thought when the mania of 2257, pple would have put their heads together and seen it as a window of opportunity to cut out the vast majority of free stuff out there!!

Anyways my

This is easy to say. Very easy. But I think we're avoiding responsibility by pointing the finger at parents. Sure, they have responsibilities for keeping their children off the adult internet sites, but we also have responsibilities too.

Too many of us, myself included, are giving away hardcore porn. One example, and I'm not saying anything negative about this company, is Bang Bus. I've never joined the site but when it started I downloaded every trailer. They showed everything I wanted to see from start to finish.

Our free content shows just about anything you can imagine, and most of us don't do enough to protect children from accessing it. Many sites don't have the tools in place to even allow filtering programs to block them.

My Week in Review

From this entry in my blog:
http://www.***************.com/2005/...in-review.html

I thought it was a good idea!

Quote:
Someone asked me to start making posts about what I've done all week. The person who requested this must think we live the life of Riley or something. I find my life to be rather normal, with the exception of the fact that naked girls are always in it.

But anyway, here's my week in review:

On Monday I interviewed a few new prospective models. All week I've noticed a much higher percentage than normal decided not to pose for a test shoot. I guess that must mean I'm missing something in the interview process. Must be an off week. I'll do better next week.

On Tuesday we had a usually reliable model miss her scheduled photo shoot with Belinda. Nothing else was scheduled for the hours of her photo shoot so that gave Belinda the day free to spend with my son and I. The plan had been that I'd be with him all day and she'd shoot. But since the model didn't show she got to spend time with us. My son loves her and was happy she could be with us. The model was "so sorry" and had simply forgot about it. Makes sense because this particular model is taking a pretty big class load at school. I haven't posted any photos or video of her on any of my sites yet. She's pretty hot, in my opinion. I'm stockpiling content of her before introducing her to the public.

On Wednesday we shot another model who happens to be afraid of what her boyfriend might do if he finds out she's posing naked for the internet. Belinda did the shoot. The model seems willing to take the chance, as she's posed for us twice now. I find her pretty attractive as well. Again, this is another girl who has not yet been released on my sites. I'm pretty well known locally so I'm having a hard time deciding what to do with this one if she has a boyfriend who might cause problems for her. During part of the shoot I was off at a coffee shop having a meeting with a guy who might start answering ads for me in another town. I'd like to expand my model recruiting base. He seems reliable and was actually involved in producing content in San Diego nearly 4 years ago. Perhaps he'll work out and we'll see an explosion of new Donny's Girls talent.

On Thursday I only scheduled one interview. The rest of the day was set aside for my son again. The interview showed up and has potential. The rest of the day consisted of my son and I chasing each other, watching a movie (my son's first viewing of The Princess Bride: I knew he'd love it! What 5 year old boy doesn't like pirates and swordfights?), playing a few video games and doing a lot of talking. I'm always amazed at how intelligent he is!

On Friday we had two photo shoots. One girl showed up at 9am and had to leave by noon, and the second one started at noon and lasted half a day. She's got great personality and a good look too. We shot photo and video footage of both models. Most of it was for one of Playboy's publications, but some was for Donny's Girls. After shooting was over we went to dinner with my friend John Hughes and his family. Then went to their house and drank some beers until I was legally unable to drive.

Today is Saturday. I have two shoots scheduled today and am pretty sure both of them will show up. One model has already called to confirm and the other has never missed a scheduled shoot time. The first shoot will be for Donny's Girls and the second will be for Amateur Market.

That's a typical week. To the person who requested it, I hope you enjoy it. I have to admit, I enjoyed sharing this. If readers like it I'll continue every week.

I think they did bring this on to a point, alot of people have a fuck you I will do whatever I want attitude. Also alot of people in our industry are short term thinkers, make money now who gives a fuck about tomorrow, example people embrace penis grow pills we all know they dont work, your bascially fucking the customer. They dont care about the long term effects, same with checked cross sales etc etc. Also with spam our industry is pushing porn on people so you cant use the if you dont like it dont look at it argument. People also feel they will never come after me, I tell people and most roll their eyes. There is a 99.5% chance they will never bother you but you have to be ready for that .5 because it can be a real motherfucker.

They were at war with porn long before the internet. Even when it was softcore sold in a brown paper bag from a guy behind the counter. Even from adults-only shops. There were still prosecutions. It doesn't matter to them. They hate that it exists. They hate having all that temptation is out there. And they can't stand that other people are getting away with it. It's the content they're at war with, not the delivery vehicle.

The adult biz was always it's own worst enemy even before the net ever existed.

The main problems have come from individuals/companies who have stepped beyond the line of what the public would find acceptable. In several countries these actions have been the reason further legislation was implemented.

On the flip side, you may notice those who have been in the adult biz for decades are doing business as normal without problems.

Probably the oldest biz in "adult" started in the late 40's/early 50's and is flourishing well with both bricks and mortar stores, print and online promotion. While others on GFY show off their "new offices" - quieter companies have complete office blocks and staff catering facilities bigger than any net webmasters offices. We hear much of them? Nope - I've never heard any of the names from webmasters once in my ten years on the net. Much as to do with balance and sane judgement - these type of companies don't get prosecuted or give cause for concern. They just produce a profit and loss account showing profits each year.

There is little doubt governments, in particular the US govt, will be acting re "porn" on the net. The whole culture from "in God we trust", "values" and "freedoms" onwards lends itself to attacking porn, often simply because elected indivduals from the local sherriff, prosecutors to the Whitehouse just feel a need to justify their existance and maintain "electability".

At the same time, the "harder" webmasters choose to display their "wares", the more justification is handed on a plate for govt to act. Common sense shit really!

everyone points their fingers at us anyway.. They never claim responsibility.. sure, WE (not all but some) give away free hardcore porn that children can easily access BUT we did not by the kids the computer.. If the parents are so worried why don't they get somefiltering software so their kids can't access all the free, easily access porn? Oh but of course it's our fault all the time.

True, many sites don't have the tools available to allow filtering programs to block them. That is our fault.. We are partially to blame along with the parents and the government. I just hate that 2 of the 3 never take responsibility.. It's always our fault all the time. Something needs to change before the gov. gets even more out of control than it already is. Fucking religion is nothing but bullshit that fucks many, many people.

The thing in the US at least, is that religion swings a bigger dick than porn does. They have $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and they are organized. We have money as well, but to save our own fucking lives we are not organized.

Look at this bullshit with the FSC. what the fuck are they doing making a deal to protect ONLY thier paying members. do poor people not have the right to free speech? What about the little webmaster that just could not put up the cash that they wanted??

FSC said FUCK THEM, and in the long run, have only hurt the ones that paid. Once the DOJ goes after a few non members, they will get some case law established. And they will then use that to fuck the paying members right in the ass.

Fight against is pointless just because it is. But when you get forced to watch it, then people start reacting. Those made most damage, are the email spammers, and those sponsors allowing it.
Without spam, there would be no "big" war against porn, just some smaller groups with no influence.

The "winners" in this war will be those with long term thinking and playing straight from the start.

Yes! The scum in this industry insisted on pushing porn to the limit while insisting they had a right to do so, unconcerned that minors might be viewing it. NOT! And now they will pay, and unfortunately everyone else.

You bother to open it? You don't have a filter in place?

Somehow I suspect we'd be in the cross-hairs even if we were more organized. Many have try to organize, just seem to work on a large scale.

The answer in great part lies with the big dollars. If sponsors like ClickCash, NastyDollars, AFF etc. created a different environment. The industry might be different??? A handful could make some big changes. Think how many affiliates belong to that handful of programs.

That said, how would anyone every control off-shore (nonUS/Canada) from doing what they please. Remember in the end though, the US government holds the keys to the Web/Internet. Will there come a day when the citizens from other countries are indited for obscenity charges? Step off the plane headed for a trade show and then into a cell to wait for a court appearance.

There will always be people that push the envelope to make a buck no matter what the risk.

Looks like things are really heating up. US mid term elections may send a message, but I doubt that they will make a big difference.

....

a common idea that has been passed around in anti-porn discussions and in white papers is on the issue of children having easy access to porn.

there are 3 common ways that children can find porn:

1) word of mouth
2) email spam
3) search engines

on point #1, kids talk to each other. they know about theHun, PK, etc. these kinds of porn directories is how kids can find porn.

on point #2, spam is a big problem with those spammers that do brute force spamming of not using a list, but making up email addresses to yahoo, hotmail, etc.. but i would guess that more spam is done from email lists that have been resold a hundred times, and probably 99% of those are adult email addresses

on point #3, try entering search terms that kids would enter (non-adult), and you will probably never find any adult links coming back.

so how are kids epidemically being exposed to free porn?

i don't think they are, i believe there are kids that do seek it out.

the 'harm' to kids, to me, are ones of the age of 14 and under. these are truly "kids" that might be harmed by seeing graphic sexual depictions.

the search engines try their best to bring back relevant results. so when a child enters keywords, the chances of seeing porn links is low unless a porn website (most likely an affiliate) uses keywords that children might use (which is a point that anti-porn people site), but the effort to attract children to porn seems to be a wasted marketing effort and of resources since children with credit cards who would buy porn would seem to be a very very very very small percentage.

the best way to keep kids away, is to have the .KIDS TLD in place.

parents could then use software (like a modified version of IE or firefox) that would ONLY allow .KIDS extensions.

.XXX will never prevent a child from seeing porn due to its blacklisting approach.

i thnk because adults get adult-spam, and search in google using 'adult' words, and see adult results and websites, that they think kids might see the exact same thing. i would debate that this assumption is not true, with no solid facts by anti-porn pundits to support their claims of children being exposed to the "free porn".

yes, "free porn" is out there in the hundreds of millions of web pages, but the way that a surfer can find those pages is because they are looking specifically for them... and if a child is looking for porn, they aren't being "exposed", they are getting what they are seeking.. and this is where parental monitoring and technology filtering/blocking in using .KIDS will be the answer that truly keeps kids from seeing porn.

Online porn is a business and as such should be pragmatic and leave people to deal with issues like freedom of speech/expression on a personal level.

With that in mind, it is surely foolish that so many of us tolerate and even work (indirectly) with those who base their businesses on content and/or business practises which are not acceptable to large numbers of the public. The vast majority of us have nothing to gain from such operators and their sites and if they are not the only reason for the "war on porn", to many people they are the face of porn and certainly provide ammunition for our opponents.

FSC is a trade association that is made up of members that PAY DUES.

While there are those that give money to PBS, there is a greater majority that watch and never give. When it comes to being a defendant in litigation, you have to define group, and "all adult webmasters" is a bit vague...so instead, the group is defined as those who are members of FSC.

so many affiliate webmasters are expecting sponsors to give them everything..

free hosting
free content
free promotional tools

and so many are assuming that this "free" ride should extend to FSC membership dues?

some sponsor programs like adult.com were looking to cover affiliates if they wished to join.

If a webmaster can't afford $300/yr to pay for the dues, then they are just a hobbyist...and should probably re-think about being in the adult biz with all the risks that come with it.
