CNN. http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/10/06/r....ap/index.html

FONTANA, California (AP) -- A driverless red Hummer snagged the pole
position Wednesday in a government-sponsored sequel race across the
Mojave Desert that will pit 23 robots against one another.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Five of the vehicles finished it four consecutive times. Those included
H1ghlander; a converted Humvee Sandstorm; a modified Volkswagen Touareg
by Stanford University; a six-wheel truck; and a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

DARPA, the Pentagon's research and development arm, spent $9 million on this year's event. The agency would award the prize to the first team whose computer-driven vehicle can traverse a rough and winding desert course of up to 175 miles in less than 10 hours.

Probably a lot safer to be on the same road with one of them than some of the cars with drivers in them around here

I used to love watching that Robot Wars show on TechTV.
