As Stuart said there has to be at the very least a little desire in the person to sober up or all the time and effort you put in is wasted . Thinking you can rescue someone who dont wanna be rescued is futile. If the desire is there convince them to go to a 30 day lockdown detox unit. Its a make or break thing in there.
The person would have to recognize that there's a problem first... then have a desire to correct the problem.
If the person is convinced that he/she is just fine, whether they really are or not, they'll take your intervention as an insult and an attack.

as long as they have not gotten to a point where they really REALIZED that there IS a problem, that HAS to be corrected, they wont. there is not too much of what you can do as an outstanding person.
