Do you have all your memories backed up?

I was going through all my photos. I have about 2,000 from college and before in a large bin in my closet, I'm fairly certain (barring a flood or a fire) that they'll always be with me, but my digital pics are a different story.

How do you go about backing them up? I was reading that CDs only last 2 years and we all know harddrives crash. what did you do to back up your memories?

I only have personal photos. They're important, but if I was to loose them, I wouldn't loose any money. I archive them on an external hard drive that is only powered up when I back up photos to it. So that reduces the Chance of mechanical failure.

If I was archiving professional photos, I would likely build a cheap Linux server, load up Samba for file sharing and put in a RAID array of disks. It would likely cost about $500 - $700, but I would always know where my photos were and that they'd be there when I needed them.

I eat lots of cheddar to ensure my hard drive never crashes.

I have one folder for my digital pics. Each time I add new pics I back up the whole folder to DVD, so older pics have many backups. This came in handy when my house flooded in Katrina because I was able to salvage all (or at least all I remember) of my pics and put them on my new computer.

My biggest loss was home videos. I had bought a standalone DVD recorder to transfer them to DVD, but had only gotten a few of them done.

Anyone know if there's a company that specializes in removing salty storm surge from video tapes?

SO external HDs are the way to go?

I have an Ipod, is that safe enough?

I just have a seperate hard drive for backups, it's probably easiest and most reliable way to backup stuff...
