Hi what would you suggest be a good max connection for httpd.config I have mine now set at 256 can I go up to 350 ??

you mean maxclients ?

if you use top and look at the size of httpd processes and how much ram the machine has then do ram - 200 / size of httpd processes and use that number for maxclients

256 is default the max. Always keep 1 less than the max. Else it will bring your
entire server to its knees in case it gets flooded.

If you set it higher than 256 on a default apache....it will not start and exit with
an error message

To configure more than 256 clients, you must edit the HARD_SERVER_LIMIT entry in httpd.h and recompile.

And where would I see it if my maxclients settings are reached during runtime? Would that be logged in the error_logs?

Yeah depends on how much ram you have. I had max clients set to 512 when I had 512 megs of ram on a Cobalt Raq3i and that was back in 1999.

It depends on how good of a server you have and mainly how much ram you have, but honestly i dont suggest going over 999 unless you really have to. then again if apache is really the only thing running then go as high as u want but it honestly just depends on what your doing

More important what you should look at is.....is why you need to increase your
maxclients....it's all nice and well but unless you have millions uniques per day
there is no reason to increase the maxclients settings......unless some of the
other server directives aren't configured the correct way.....

Don't just increase the maxclients settings BEFORE you have checked all
other settings.....coz more than likely you don't have these settings configured
for optimal performance.
