Reckless NJ Police Convoy Escapes VA Justice
New Jersey police are outraged at being stopped for driving recklessly through Virginia, even though they were not ticketed.

Deputy Michael RoaneNew Jersey police officers are furious that a Virginia sheriff's deputy asked them to obey the traffic law in Virginia. On September 18, a speeding convoy of Passaic County, New Jersey police officers barrelled through Interstate 81 in Virginia with their emergency lights blazing -- but there was no emergency. The officers were just in a hurry to get home after service in the gulf region.

Clocked at 95 MPH in the 65 MPH zone, the convoy of about a dozen vehicles was asked to pull over by Augusta County, Virginia Sheriff's Deputy Michael Roane. Six of the New Jersey police sped away without stopping.

"We're not above the law," Roane said in an interview with WHSV-TV. "We have to obey the speed limits. We cannot run emergency equipment when there's no emergency."

In what was described as an initially hostile stop, Roane politely asked the New Jersey officers to turn off their lights and slow down. The Passaic officers claimed that returning from helping with Hurricane Katrina rescue duties gave them the right to speed.

"We just had guys down there for the last 14 days... helping our brothers in blue," Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale said in a recorded telephone call to Roane after the incident. "You know what? You need to get off of that highway, pal, and wake up and learn what law enforcement is all about -- supporting each other."

"It's a disgrace," Speziale said of Roane's conduct. "If you think that that's not a disgrace, you should take the badge off your shirt and throw it in the garbage."

It is unlikely that ordinary motorists returning from equally hazardous volunteer rescue efforts would receive the same courtesy. Under Virginia law, it is illegal to operate emergency lights when there is no emergency. Moreover, driving 80 MPH on any highway is considered reckless driving and carries a sentence of 12 months in jail, a $2500 fine, a six-month license suspension and possible car confiscation (VA code § 46.2-862).

A convoy of New York Police Department officers returning from duties in the Gulf Coast stayed in the right-hand lane and obeyed the speed limit.

i know cops .. and many get this above the law attitude ... it's crazy to me that after seeing all kinds of accidents they would even think of driving like that and have no respect for the county that there passing through ... it's sad

Cops are above the law, did they even get ticketed?? no they didn't. If it was me I would have let them go right through also. You have to respect someone who will sacrifice themself so that laws are upheld in the streets.

when i was 19 i had my car impounded a few towns from me for having weed in the car (just a small bag, no 'intent to sell' type shit).. I got pulled over by two undercover cops riding in a fucking TAXI cab. After getting a ticket, and my car towed away, lol... the cops asked me how i was gonna get home (it was like 2am). I said i had no money and theres no1 to pick me up at that hour, so one of the cops drove me home. In that same taxi cab.

what irked me tho, was the way this mofo was driving. I was in the backseat, and it was raining, and this mofo was speeding doing 90 or so on the bronx river parkway (NY), which is the first highway in the US and one of the most shittiest (2 lanes, VERY tight, mad twistys - speed limit is 40 LOL). So im sitting in the backseat the whole time thinking this asshole is gonna crash and im gonna die. Well we made it off the highway in one piece... but as hes going thru my town, hes still speeding. Each red light he came up to, he stopped for a sec and then just went right thru it. Im like WTF? Its not even his 'jurisdiction' to pull some shit like that. I was hoping some local squad car would pull us over and give him a ticket. well i got home alive... but real pissed cuz my fucking car was impounded.

I've probably been arrested by a couple of those assholes. I can't stand that attitude that cops have. THEY ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW regardless of what they'd like to believe. How to get another cop to enforce it? Well, I didn't say I had all the answers.

Unfortunately, yes some of them are "above the law." The cop should have ticketed them at least.... and let the judge deal with it later. You dont need to be screaming down the highways like that. Thats a big accident waiting to happen. They are tired, probably not at their sharpest. Anything could have gone wrong. I have a feeling they will be in trouble. But I would argue the point that there is bad people in every profession.
