I bought one at walmart for 40 bucks but it sucks, go to the 200 dollar model.

Look for a Fuji, their inexpensive, light, and tough. If you are beginning with road bikes then try one out.

Other that that I see people riding Specialized, Trek, Giant, and then some crazy European brands I have never heard of before.
      I don't own RexMag anymore.

Whatevery you do, don't buy a bike with read wheel suspension. They absolutely suck for riding on the roads (they're made for off-roading and downhill cycling). Get one with front wheel suspension and a nice stiff frame. And like devilspost said, don't go for the cheapest one because it can cost you your life.

Like the Lance Armstrong kind? I've always used a light mountain bike on the streets. Give you more options and stability. I've got a Fisher and it's a good bike. If you get a bike with rear suspension, make sure it's fully adjustable.

the top road bikes are made by Eddie Merckx but they are quite expensive,

if you are just starting out and in the US I would go with Trek, they from all the US suppliers have the most experience in that field and also the best bike

Depends, are you new to cycling? The type of bike you get will depend on what type of riding you want to do.
Best bet is to go to your local bike shop ask questions.
Also read some issues of Bicycling magazine, they do bike reviews.
Don't be too anxious to get a top of the line bike, I spin 500km a week and drop guys with bikes that cost twice as much as mine.

                        yes.

new to cycling. want to be able to jump on it with a small backpack and ride 20-30 miles. stay overnight somewhere and ride back.

and for general exercise too. like 2-5 miles per day, or roughly 1.0 hours of exercise each day.

Yeah I forgot to mention, if you are looking to get into serious bike riding, like with clubs and such then you might as well start out on a road bike. If you are looking for something casual just for excercie and some confort check out a "hybrid". I wouldn't suggest riding a mountain bike on the streets, only trails.

I can't emphasize enough that it's important to go to a GOOD bike shop and ask questions because you will want to get the correct frame size and get the bike "fitted" to your body size.

If you buy one online, you should have your local shop put it together so you can get setup correctly. If the bike is a really bad fit for you, it could make your cycling experience a bad one.

Also I have found, at least locally, that retail bike shop prices are just as good as you can find online; plus your bike shop may give you a discount if you belong to a local club.
