Can you write HTML by hand?

I do a mixture.. I can write it by hand but still use an editor to rip through it faster.. I then run the HTML from the editor through a script that cleans it up and puts it into a format that I like.. Once the HTML is clean I never open it in an editor again.

Yes i do.
I also know a little php. I spend the last 8 hours customizing wordpress. I am going to college to take php courses (something to do with php) as well. Making script (php) is the one thing im not good at. Might as well go to college and learn it. |

I couldn't figure out dreamweaver, it does to much extra BS.. I have no problems with PS but dreamweaver killed me.. I use WebExpress 3.0, it has no extra bs, it's simple and it isn't to hard to clean up the HTML after it gets done jacking it up.

the only thing that dreamweaver is good for is the fact is colorizes different parts of the html code.
especially with php fuck the layout window, use the code window and the ftp window.

what works best for me is to use split screen in Dreamweaver. I use the WSIWYG editor in DW and just keep an eye on the HTML in the HTML window. DW normally does a good job but some tasks are better done by manually typing in HTML and some of DW's code needs a tweak now and agiain.
Working in split mode is also a great way to learn HTML

I hire programmers and coders for complex or time consuming scripts and projects, but enjoy and can write 90% of everything that needs to be done on a site usually myself. I like coding it by hand also. That's the only way to really learn I think.

the real deal about HTML is not if you can write the code line for line - its about understanding what the code does and how it works. the only HTML editing i do usually is cut and paste - works for me just fine.

100% yes.
the code itself is what interested in me in this biz in the first place. back in 1998 during my very first time on the internet i discovered the view source , upon seeing this i became very curious so started to explore it, then bought some books for it, html for dummies, then read everything i could find. pretty much have it all memorized now that it's been so long. but once in a while this old fossils brain forgets a thing or two & has to look it up. i never forget the basics, but do forget certain javascript attributes so have to look those up. only code types i dont know how to write are php/mysql cgi, asp, ssi & the code for wireless devices. i have out code through dreamweaver to convert to xml for wireless, but it sure likes to fuck things. but i like to see code view & compare the notepad version with html to the dreamweaver xml version to learn the differences. i'm getting there. |

Always. Started back in the early 80's with Bookmaster when I wrote manuals for IBM. Been doin' it that way ever since. ZendIDE and UltraEdit are my editors of choice.

I started in adult thinking I would hand code everything. I decided pretty quickly that it wouldn't kill me to learn Dreamweaver.
But I am very glad I know how to hand code. It helps alot if a table isn't working right, a tag is fucked up, etc.

I use Notepad.
I once tried Frontpage but then I realized that I could learn HTML faster then I could learn Frontpage. And back in the day Frontpage fucked up a lot of code anyway. The HTML books seem long but they are acutally quite short. There's a lot of repetitive information in those books that makes it seem like a lot. |

Dreamweaver DOES count. I hand-code my stuff then switch over to take a peek at what I've got thus far.
