Sampling & Mixing
Does anyone here sample or mix music with computers? If so what software and sound cards would you recommend?
Trying to get back to my DJing roots. Thanx! LD ![]()

i use Reason for some internal drum sampling and bass, sometimes I just use Soundforge or Cubase for straight digital recording (multitrack) - but the best set up is the new Mac G4 with ProTools by Digidesign, but its about 11k for the full set up.
Do you have Mac? If so go ProTool, its what they use in all major recording studios across the US. But if you just plan on doing your own, if you want to multitrack, just grab a copy of Cubase or Cakewalk. If you wanna sample, there are tons of digital samplers out there, but software wise I hear Gigasampler is OK, not many "latency" problems. Reason by Propellerhead is what I mainly use, once you see it youll need not look elsewhere. Its synths, drum machines , samplers, virtual analog style sequencer with 808 and 909 drums and 1000s of presampled drum sounds. Ummm, i dont feel like typing more, if you need more ifno let me know. Im more knowledgeable on synths and analog keyboards, but I know some software shit too. added: I failed to mention ProTools makes a lower end user module which a friend of mine has and it kicks ass, i think they make it for both Mac and PC, anyway, its $799 its Digidesigns "Digi001" look it up on their site, it tottally rocks, it turns your pc into a 24 track digital recorder with XLR and standard 1/4 male Digital in/outs and 96 bit processing.

I agree with both posts.
If you are going to just mix music as a DJ try http://www.atomixmp3.com/download.html It's simple but I did a whole impromtu party with MP3's on it while I was in Chicago over the holidays! Make sure you get 2 soundblaster cards which makes it easier to use. Steinberg also has a new program called Traktor which is good. Both are very commercial but it gets the job done. If you are looking to sample I actually use Recycle when on the road on my laptop.! It's at; http://www.propellerheads.se/ If you are trying to make music Pro-Tools in all its forms is the best. If you have a lump of cash grab their mix desk and a dual cpu g4. I did a whole album on that! Check out all the Pro-Tools lines; http://www.digidesign.com Also go to http://www.emusician.com to check out the new hot programs that we don't know about or haven't used yet! |

I like it the old fashion way. (Im dumb as fuck with most software)
I sample sounds, into the sampler, make the loops there. Ill record the loops into the computer. I use a combination of Cakewalk and Acid to sync the loops and build the tracks. After it's all done, I just lay the multiple tracks into cakewalk. Cool to see some others doing some similar stuff! |

Hey thanks for the replies. I'm gonna check out the links and I appreciate the hands on info and experiences. I can't wait to start sampling & mixing again. Last time I touched this kind of stuff was in the 80's using an akai sampler and a multi-track tape deck!
Not as old as I sound, I just started young... Hmmm actually maybe I am getting old! Sounds like there are some pros/semi pros from the posts on this thread? Thanks again! LD

MixMan Studio pro is great for mixing from tables to the computer.. and the sound blaster platinum with the internal front jack bay is the best sound card to use.. they're about $150

for mixing mp3's i suggest BMP Studio its a great tool and perfect for putting your stuff direct on cd
for vinyl mixing stuff you should head over to steinberg en search for the program "Clean" or "Traktor DJ" its great to put vinyl on cd or mp3 whatever and for producing Cubase VST off course |

Old fashion tools rocks just like fast tracker but, computer software is mostly cheaper than a complete roland sampler |
