question about DSL modems

I want a backup modem for my DSL home account: does any (A)DSL modem
work on a default DSL connection or are there different flavors i should be aware of?

The current modem i have is from Alcatel and was supplied by my provider.

yeah i tried that; no luck.. its a custom made modem for my provider.
Im sure it a generic model but inless i open up the case hard to find out which.

The fuickers will only replace it when its broken and it takes 2-4 days when it does. Thats like cutting of oxygen for me!

Some work better with different DSLAMs, but *generally* they tend to be the same. I give higher odds that it's a generic one given that it's an Alcatel.

The important thing is being able to get the virtual circuit info from your provider (you'll need it to config the new one).

I've had the best luck with the Siemens/Efficient SpeedStream 5861 ADSL routers (got about 100 of them in the field)
