:stoned Teacher fired, banned for ripping out student's insulin pump

He thought the beeping alerting that the 9th grader had become low on insulin was a cell phone, so he ripped it out

absolute idiot. Have teachers gone this far that they simply dont care about the students that taking physical action against them is the only means? What teachers are meant to do is if there is a class interruption is to simply remove the student from the class and send them down to the office with a warning.

The student on the other hand should have been able to say, "dude, its an insulin pump" then show it.. the teacher woudl have left him alone. Perhaps the student was being an ass and not refused to give any excuse. Still does not give the right of the teacher to attack them.

Well he is lacking some brain power, but he didn't rip it out. He obviously didn't know what it was and disconnected it. The story is a bit vague on whether or not the student protested and tried to explain to the mentally challenged substitute that it was a medical device.

My little girl is on an insulin pump and it is obvious it isnt some kind of electronic gizmo. The first thing that clues you in is a cathedor(s?) tube coming out of the pump. I dont know what I would do if this had happened to her.

The sub didn't do the right thing. It was hardly assault, he acted in what he thought was an appropriate manner given the information he had.

Sorry to hear, sucks for the kid. I'm sure he'll be okay though.

And risk a lawsuit for publically humiliating someone? Or worse?

Make no mistake, there WILL be a lawsuit about this too. Filed against the teacher, the school, school division etc, and whoever else the lawyer they retain to represent them can think of including in a lawsuit.

Cases like this show why we have discipline problems in our schools. Teachers are afraid to show any authority, while students have NO fear of the teachers. I have no doubt teachers are even provoked into doing things that can result in frivolous lawsuits.

Note-That's not to say what this teacher did was correct, because it wasn't. However, with what little information we have for all WE know, cell phones were going off for the past 15 minutes in his class-because he WAS a substitute-he'd had enough and made a bad judgement call. Again, he could very easily have been provoked and now it's HIM who's out of a job.

actually I am diabetic and am on insulin. what happens if your low for a lengthy period of time the teacher should have recognized symptoms. The pump was only warning, meaning that it would either kick in insulin or the student would have to take a sugar pill to bring it up slowly so as not to go too far the other way.

but when it gets low, your judgement isnt clouded (any diabetic could use that in a court if they shot someone). Have you ever seen someone in a diabetic shock??

sounds like teachers are going to need to be videotaped in class for legal reasons. Agreed that students are more arrogant and teachers are being threatened - but a substitute ( I was one at one point) is told how to handle situations in the class and to remove the student from the situation... you are specifically told never to get into a physical war with the student.

kinda feel bad for both parties. The substitute should have been informed of children in his class with a pre-existing medical condition.. The story is a bit vague on whether the kid informed the teacher at any point that it was a medical device.. Knowing kids these days it might have gone like this

Teacher - "whats that beeping coming from ? "

Kid - " dats my cilin pump homey , quit tweakin. "

Teacher - " well you will have to disconnect any cell phones while in class "

Kid " quit buggin yo. the beeping is telling me my cilin is low foo "

Teacher " fine i will disconnect it and give it back at the end of the day "

I remember the days when you addressed your teachers as Mr., Ms., Miss or Mrs.

That's where the respect started. Teachers and students are NOT peers.

I am more or less the only female in my family not to be a teacher so I have a lot of respect for teachers and hard situations. However, so many of the substitute teachers I had a kid were just seriously odd.
