R I P - Cliff Burton 19 yrs ago Today

Metallica's first bassist Clif Burton Died today 19 yrs ago, I still say if Cliff didnt pass Metallica would have never sold out. I know alot of you on this board are too young to Remmber this but i remember exactly where is was when i heard he was killing in a bus crash.

Still one of the best bassists i have ever heard and he was one of the reasons i started playing bass.

R.I.P Cliff.

And i disagree with the sellout statement. Im sure Cliff would be ecstatic at the bands success. And i dont buy the sellout as even something that happened, they adapted, they put out albums, they play the music, they sell a shitload with every release.

How is being one of the most successful bands of their era (and the current) and be sellouts? I think mainstream went heavy, i dont think metalica went mainstream.

Great musician -- great performer. I remember exactly where I was when I heard he died -- on my way to pick up my bass player for band rehearsal -- in my mother's Volkeswagon Rabbit

RIP Cliff -- I know you and Rhoads are kicking it with Bonham when Jimi and Stevie Ray are trippin' too hard to tune up!

I was into Metallica pretty much from the beginning. I was lucky enough to see Metallica live before Cliff died. I remember cutting class the day the 'Black Album' was released so I could pick it up as soon as the mall opened. About half way through listening to it in the parking lot, I was so pissed I wanted to throw it out the window. There's no way you can convice me they didn't sell out, I was there when it happened.

The so called 'heavy' bands that are mainstream today, have little in common with the 'real' heavy bands that are still around today, like Slayer for example.

As far as the comment that they wouldn't have sold out if Cliff lived, I've said that before too, but I'm not totally sure about it. After all, I never thought Celtic Frost would sell out either. And I did throw Cold Lake out the window after I listened to it once.

I recently sold off all my old cassettes on ebay. While I was sorting through them I paused to listen to Hellhammer. I hadn't listened to them in years. I'm happy to say that Apocalyptic Raids has held up very nicely.

Cliff was awesome, as far as metallica selling out they can make whatever type of music they want you dont own them. Sure bands like slayer still play "real metal" but if a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it does it still make a sound?

Metallica sells out every concert. I'm sure they laugh at the sell-out comments. What do they care about a minority being pissed off, when the majority are buying everything they produce and making them rich. Living well is the best revenge.

everybody gets older...getting rich can soften a bitch up too. If Metallica were the type of band to let others influence their sound then they would have ended up sounding like Ratt or Van Halen in the first place.

...And Justice For All

Was the pinnacle of their careers and they know it. Everything else after was dog shit, prepackaged for the billboard lists.

They had no radio play, no videos, and still sold tons of CDs.

They got the money, and they softened up, as does everyone. When you are not pissed at the world, poor, and rehab was finally successful, your days of making cutting edge music disappear.

Pull out Kill 'em all, Master of Puppets, Ride The Lightning, and And Justice For All and compare them to Black Album, Load, Re-Load. I did not buy anything after Re-Load so I can only assume the other ones sucked as hard.

Sad to say, Cliff would have sold out too... Bird's of a feather flock together, and these dudes turned into douche bags.

Cliff was a decent bassist, especially creative considering how limiting heavy metal is for the bass guitar. I auditioned for Metallica along with every other Bay Area bassist. My favorite comment was Lars' comment about Les Claypool (Blind Illusion, later Primus) auditioning for Metallica - "He's too good."

yup, rip cliff; my first heavy band it was cool to not like what everyone else did. They have been playing this documentary for the last month up here about the last album they did; was not bad but alot of the bullshit was present as expected.
