FOXNEWS just reported Rita may be a CAT 5!

Just watching and they said that the Hurrican Hunter planes are malfunctioning and in the process of being repaired. He said that the recent radar images are looking as though the storm has increased to a category 5 and appear to have winds above 155mph.

How he knows this I have no idea but I guess that's why he is a meteorologist and I'm not.

God bless the folks that live where this will make landfall

the only way they can tell is if the pressure dropped and if the hunter planes aren't flying, i'd like to know how this guy knows as well.

I don't know if the water there is that much colder. The gulf is very warm all around. There is going to be some serious damage. Fingers crossed for everyone there.

It's already cat 4 so going to cat 5 isn't impossible nor even improbable. Hope folks are getting the hell outta there.

There is a method used called Dvorak numbers. Pretty simple system really but there is a degree of inaccuracy involved.

They showed a picture from NOAA.

I agree that Foxnews is usually a pile of overhyped garbage but found it interesting anyhow and thought I would share. I was watching it while eating lunch sandwiches with my wife and son just a few minutes ago. We had shaved chicken breast and salami sandwiches served on potato rolls with Cheddar/Sour Cream Lays Potato chips, a Klaussen mini pickle split in half and a nice ice cold glass of iced tea.

I wish the part about cooler waters were true but it isn't, the shallows are in the 80's also and that beast looks like its headed right up my arse

btw they have bouey's that give wind speed and pressure measurements all over the gulf too ... haven't heard anything about it being a cat 5 yet though *crossing fingers and hoping it goes into Mexico*

No, Houston is not way inland, its nearly on the oceanfront but it does have an island called Galviston in front of it. That island is in the process of manditorily evacuation

Thank you

I'm in San Antonio which is about 150 miles inland but if it hits category 5 and heads for Corpus Christi (which would bring it right to me) instead of Houston, I'm headed to Dallas!! (waving at Brad) lol

Even a Cat 1 can be very destructive. Cat 5's are catostrophic damage where it will look like a nuke went off like we've seen in the Gulf already.

I agree Anything above tropical storm level (and even tropical storm level to some extent) needs to be taken VERY seriously.

New recon found a pressure of 934 mb. I believe that is the 11th most intense Atlantic hurricane ever.

Just get out - I know these things sound like an adventure, but trust me you will regret it.

I remember when I got to NZ thinking how cool it was going to be to feel my 1st earthquake.. WRONG!! It was a 7.2, and when I had finished cleaning my underwear I promised to be careful what I wished for in the future.

Its wont be exciting... Its going to be real fucking scary!

Bad news is that the pressure continues to drop rapidly. Down to 923mb now. Could easily become a cat 5.

Slight good news is that such intense storms don't usually say that strong for an extended period of time.

Regardless, if you are in a storm surge zone you need to get the fuck out of there as the surge and damage is going to be catastrophic.

My prayers are going out to anyone in the path of this.

Thanks for the warning.

You are right. It does sound like an adventure. It's just such an inconvenience to have to leave and invade someone else's home with 3 pain in the ass dogs. I think the only danger I'm going to be in is flooding. Then if that does happen, I'll have to rescue 3 dogs and myself. I'll probably head out of here tomorrow. I'm just hoping this thing makes a hard left turn down south.

I think the only danger I'm going to be in is flooding. Then if that does happen, I'll have to rescue 3 dogs and myself. I'll probably head out of here tomorrow. I'm just hoping this thing makes a hard left turn down south.
I hope you've got some good flotation devices around there.

Very descriptive thanks
