hardrive Data recovery places?

The power adapater on my toshiba exploded and my hardrive stopped working.. that's life i guess.

I got a quote from one place and they want 1500 and thats a 60% chance of recovery of data..

It's a scam becuase they make you pay for all the parts and labor regardless if it works or not, so thats like 700 right there you are sinking into a useless hardrive if it doesnt work.

Has anyone went through this process before, if so, was it successful?

Geek Squad at Best Buy will do it fairly cheap. I had a friend do it a few months back after he spilled a 1 litre coke on his laptop.

Good luck!

i've used a data recovery service out of canada before, was a pretty good turn around, 1500 sounds very high for a 60% chance of sucess if you ask me though.

fuck that shit ...

my friend can do it .... he's a sweet christian boy and would do it for free for me, but if it's business related he might want to charge like a hundred bucks...

I'm not in the industry anymore ... don't know how you'd feel about sending a HD to someone with ties .. if u want you can send the HD along with a non-disclosure =)

if the hd does not spin up and cant be seen by the bios that seems to be the going rate at most places for recovery if it spins up and is physically seen you can try software that should be able to recover most of anything.

There is a company called "Total Recall" that offers a free quote and "no recovery, no fee" service:

Total Recall

Also, DiskDoctors and other such companies are listed under "Data Recovery" in Google.

Good luck,
