ICANN delays .xxx tld

Quote:
As for ".xxx," the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers deferred final approval for the second time in as many months.

The board decided to seek changes to a proposed contract with ICM Registry Inc., the Jupiter, Fla., that would run the domain name for voluntary use by the adult entertainment industry. No details were immediately available on the changes sought.

IMO, ICANN is looking for a way to get out of this without loosing face.

There is a good chance this will hit ICANN like a boomerang, once the UN's Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) http://www.wgig.org/ have had their meeting in November. From their repport http://www.wgig.org/docs/WGIGREPORT.doc there is one main theme "international development of the internet". That doesn´t leave much room for ICANN in its current form - well, not an ICANN that base their decisions on fragile foundations such as the .xxx application.

There is a new internet awareness in the world, and the .xxx tld. will put the spotlight on ICANN and the US.

there are two opposite tendencies right now

one is to make the internet governance global, the second - inspired recently by the US - it to put ICANN even more directly under the US administration

Which is why the ICANN decision in June to accept the .xxx tld. was ignorant.

Ofcourse its not impossible that ICM Registry had lobbied for years, and told ICANN everything and anything they wanted to hear (including that the adult industry supports the .xxx tld.), but still you got to be very ignorant not knowing that the .xxx tld. would create massive protests and conflicts.

As long as it stays voluntary use, and not forced to use .XXX for adult content sites, then it really doesn't matter; well, it does to some degree.. anyhow.
