A question about HD..For those who actually use it.

If I switch over to HD for my own projects and the clients who are prepared for it, will my regular clients be able to play the tapes on their non-HD equipment and have at least the same quality as standard MiniDV or what?

I don't give a shit about some of your misinformed opinions about HD being overkill for content production...I only want to know if ALL of my client will be able to use the HD tapes or not.

Thank you.

Love, Aaron (back from LA) M.

I think the HD is good but most people will not see the benefit anytime soon. Thats my personal opinion.

Sony High-Definition MiniDV Handycam Camcorder: Switchable HDV/DV recording format is capable of recording and playing back both high-definition and standard-definition digital video recorded on ordinary MiniDV cassettes.

Thanks, now read the thread and answer the question or piss off.

I tried to keep it simple, guess I still confused some of you.

ARE HD RECORDED TAPES BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE IN NON-HD MACHINES WITH AT LEAST MINIDV = QUALITY?

Sorry, I don't mean to be a dick......

OK, So I lied..Yeah, I do mean to be a dick. It was a simple fucking question and I specifically said I don't want opinions. FACTS on the question at hand only please.

Allow me to clarify......

If I record in HD mode, will the HD recorded tapes play back on standard definition equipment at the same or better quality of standard MiniDV?

Excuse me while I bang my head against the wall now.......

I started using an HD camera to compliment my two Mini-DV cameras. Unfortunately on about the 10th usage, the person handling that camera dropped and broke it.

Since the camera no longer worked, I had to send the Mini-DV tapes to an outside facility to have them converted for playback on Mini-DV (even though they were shot on Mini-DV tape, they would not playback on a Mini-DV deck - you need an HD deck/camera for that).

Tapes shot in either HD or mini-DV can be edited for either usage (with trade-offs) using Final Cut Pro or other such editing programs.

I am holding off on purchasing an HD camera until I am ready to buy 2 or 3 of them at the same time, since I am finding that editing the tapes from different formats presents some technical challenges and is slowing down the editing process.

If you are shooting with one camera, I think you may as well go with HD, since then you will be among the first to have HD DVDs as the demand increases.

Thank you.

Maybe I should shoot in HD and send all clients HD DVD's to rip instead of HD tapes? Will that be as good as MiniDV or not? I've never ripped a DVD either so I'm looking at various options here.

Yeah, I don't know much how all this works at this time....Trying to learn.

Thanks again.

If you are going to be creating/authoring your own DVDs, then you can convert the content to whatever other forms you need (.wmv, etc), at the same time using the batch processing capabilities of AutoDesk Cleaner or other similar programs.

It will save you some steps, time, and will give you greater control of your content (especially if you are going to use DRM or some other method to eliminate or at least cut down on piracy).

Good luck,

ADG Webmaster

We shoot in HD and then output to standard DV (which the Sony HD camera of course does) so that you still have the option of both formats. The quality of HD with the Sony is better than standard DV with a VX2000 / VX2100 even in DV format in my opinion as the colours are so much better. The only drawback is that HD cameras not as forgiving as miniDV cameras with regards low light shooting so scenes have to be lit properly. The VX Sony?s are so forgiving that even a chimpanzee can use them but HD takes a bit more thought and know-how.

Anyone who honestly thinks that people will not see any benefit soon with HD truly have no idea what they are talking about. Even for web use our members immediately saw the difference from day one and gave us a lot feedback. No matter what you use for the web, the better you put in the better you get out.

HD tapes will not play on MiniDV devices. Your clients will need their own HD capture method. If you plan on sending raw HD content to your clients precaptured you will need to deliver it on hard drives because the files will be so big.

As others in this thread have said the lighting when using HD is EXTREMELY important.. much less forgiving than DVCAM or MiniDV.

i will have the results of first week shootng with HD on my table this week. And i'm really curious to see how it turned out. So far I have been told that at least with the FX1E the lighting is easier than with the DV cam we used before. maybe that one was just not good - also possible.

regarding the the files on DVD - this is what we did from the beginning. I was always frightend to send the original tapes and found it easier to capture the stuff and burn the files on DVD. With the Sony cam I can now offer to send HD files (MPEG2) or DV files (avi) or both. The Sony converts the HD to DV when capturing if you want or need that. The only thing is: also the DV files will be in 16:9 instead of 4:3

edit: and no, HD tapes don't play on DV devices cause it's a different format (MPEG 2)

can't you just shoot it in HD and then give them raw avi's on DVD or something ? I would have thought most people would rather have it in computer format than a tape cos the first thing they are gonna do is dump it down anyways

Aaron, I have been shooting HDV for my customers for nearly 6 months now.

If you'd like hit me up on ICQ 348 740 763. I can help with your questions. Just not interested to discuss here.
