And beating or hitting your dog doesnt teach him this. A dog doesnt understsand hitting. When your dog does something wrong, you need to grab him, throw him down on his back and hold him there. This is a universally submissive position for a dog to be in. when the dog stops fighting you and looks away, you may let him up. That will be your signal that the dog has recognized you as the dominant pack leader. BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN HURTIN IT WHEN YOU DO THIS. YOU cant blame the dog for doing what it did. It was only acting as its survival instincts told it to. When I go out and leave my dog alone, he is destructive. Goes into bedrooms and eats shit, tears it up. When I come home, he cowers as soon as I walk in the door. I take him to what he's destroyed, yell "Who done this" and then hit him (not smash him, just hit him on the rear leg) I believe he knows why he is being hurt. The problem is that he hasnt properly shown the dog in a way the dog UNDERSTANDS that he is dominant over the dog. If he had done it right in the beginning, he wouldnt have this problem now. Yes, the dog will do things likew this to test who's dominant from time to time. understand that a dog is a pack animal like you pointed out. Yet even in a pack where the alpha dog chain has been clearly established, a dog will test its place in the pack from time to time. It's how the hierarchy works. The dog will be afaid if you hit it, but it still wont really recognize you as dominant. ONLY, the method of rolling it onto its back and holding it there TRULY teaches the dog who is boss. and you dont really hurt the dog when you do it this way.Originally posted by dynastoned
