An Acre and A Car

I posted the thread about the $2000 Debit Cards for Katrina Victims and it's interesting to see people's opinions.

I think this is great that we'e making an active move to help these people out. $2000 isn't a lot of money in this day and age. For a family of 4 or 5 that money will not go far but it's something.

I tend to believe that money alone isn't always the solution and in some ways may exacerbate the issue.

There may be some merit to giving these people a new life and a new opportunity. Give them a shot at success, be it an education, a new home, a new job, some new responsiblity. Give them incentive to improve their lives in spite of the tragedy.

Our economy doesn't put enough emphasis on the value of Human Resources. I'll challenge that we have the best nation of people who can make a difference in the world. The result of this tragedy could be a large scale program that could yeild in a new American economy if you rallied the victims and encouraged them to join force.

One thing that came to mind is utilizing open acerage in the Midwest to grow and cultivate corn for Ethanol. I could see us moving to a renewale fuel economy on Ethanol or some other natural fuel. I think that there are opportunities to help the homeless and the poor improve their lives and give them a second chance in life.

Where did you pull the Ethanol thought from? (btw I dislike various corn programs). You are not suggesting the US relocate a bunch of city dwelling homeless people and place them in the midwest and tell them to grow corn are you?

There are a lot of issues facing the country right now and not just in Louisiana.

Homelessness, Joblessness, Poor Education, weak local economies and a general lack of opportunity for the average poor person to get a foothold and take advanatage of the other opportunities of America.

City overcrowding is a problem. This is especially a problem with those same cities that house these people don't have enough viable jobs for all of these people.

As much as I commend the US for giving out the $2k debit cards. I think a hand up is just as important.

Habitat For Humanity is one of my favorite programs because it really allows someone to see that there is hope and opportunity where they may not have seen it before.

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll never be hungry.

Habitat For Humanity is great at building homes that are wrecked within a year. Don't believe me, go look at some that were done a year ago.
