rio is great, but very dangerous after sunset if you are white.

best to stay in groups of 3 big guys, or hookup with a local guide and cab driver if you must go out at night.

I was down in Rio about a month ago for a couple weeks and it was great. No problems at all, and I'm as white as they come. Rode the busses around town, drank beer at the kiosks on the beach at night, partied downtown, went to concerts. No one stole my shit or harassed me.
I didn't go wandering around in the favelas by myself though. That'd be dumb.

Yeah, that's what I've heard. And sadly, Rio is the exact spot I want to visit.

The one time I came close to going was with another girl friend and we were told by many people that we probably wouldn't come back alive, lol. I'm about as white bread as they come, with light blonde hair, and she was too, so we definitely wouldn't have "blended in". I'd love to go, but I definitely think it would need to be a group thing, or at least have a few big guys.

I want to spend at least a few months there next year and just researching it all. Fortaleza and south of there all the way to Porto Seguro seems the most logical for me (I want to spend a few weeks in several different places from big cities to beach towns but not the most touristy like Rio). Any ideas are appreciated.
