I've just made a custom shoot yesterday for a client that wasn't sure enough about the shooting style, spent $500 on that under client specs of style/niche, location, wardrobe, makeup, poses, even fucking accesories the model wears, and that even before getting paid.

Review the terms of your contract 10x before paying upfront, this was for a recurring client/friend but anyway both parties are kind of right in their own points of view here in this situation, i guess you'll be more careful next time before closing a deal ;)
