This is a catastrophe that a few first responders are calling "of biblical proportions."

A single mayor and a lone police force are not going to get this situation under control.

The mayor has authority on the police department to start with.
Why did the mayor explicitly tell the police department to let the looting go on?
Had this incompetent mayor stopped the looting when it started, then the situation would not be as bad as it is.

the decision was right, help save people first - let the god damn looters do what they want, saving life is more important.

1- How many people are dying because what started out as small isolated looting incidents has now become an organized pillaging of the city by gangs of mercyless thugs?

2- Remember how many looters there were at first, not that many. Crime is like gangrene, it spreads fast, as soon as the real criminal realized it was a free for all, then hell started.

The resources in relation to the issues at hand left them with no choice but to execute rescue efforts first.

You're totally right, of course. Mayors really don't have the resources under their authority to handle a situation of this magnitude. I'd say even state governors don't have the resources to deal with such a situation, especially in a more poor state like louisiana. This kind of thing requires immediate action by the federal government. The Feds declared a state of emergency BEFORE the storm hit..they knew what was coming. How could they not have begun preparing relief/control forces?

Props again to Mayor Nagin for telling it like it is and making it clear in concrete terms the incredible gravity of the situation.

Some facts for you :2 cents:

A cop got shot in the head when he tried to stop the looting.
A national guard was shot at the Superdome when he was trying to secure it.
Firefighters could not fight fires coz there was no water pressure.
Emergency cars were mostly flooded or out of gas.
COPS WERE OUTNUMBERED with looters that were packing heat.


Soo... my question to you is "Would you rather the limited police force patrol the areas looking for survivors, or would you like them to station teams in front of shops 24/7 guarding the local shops?"

The only way to stop the looting is with force. You aren't going to stop hundreds of looters with 3 cops in front of a Walmart! Oh wait, there are thousands of shops... and only 1500 police officers :upsidedow

I liked the image on Fox News today of the lot full of New Orleans school busses that are still parked in their lot instead of being used by the New Orleans Mayor to evacuate the indigent prior to the hurricane. Surely the Mayor knew that there was a portion of his city who didn't have the ability to leave ... but he seemed to find a way out of town and left his people behind.

Is Jesse Jackson back from vacation yet? I haven't seen the Rainbow Coalition roll up into New Orleans yet.

... and imagine those people couldn't have those guns / semi-automatic guns or fully-automatic guns ... I'm sure they weren't carrying around single shot pistols, or hunting rifles..

I think I agree with you... your response was a bit confusing.

My point is that the city could not cope with the looting with the current amount of police and national guards.

What should have been done is the FULL FORCE of the US's National Guards should have been sent in on DAY 1 to restore order.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Over 1/3 of the National Guards are stationed in IRAQ right now. If the National Guard is equipped for IRAQ, they should be more than equipped for NO :2 cents:

WTF do you do to the looters trying to get food, water and dry clothes? Shoot them or lock them up?? Pretty sure the looters will bare arms if they want to live. There is not enough water and food to go around.... Loot or die... People at the shelters have not had water or food for days....
