>>> ucj question
does ucj require any .htaccess code to work properly? i uploaded on the server an empty htaccess file having info where to send 404. On the server it didnt appear any .htaccess visible. But, when i uploaded my .htaccess it didn't appear too. I'm afraid the existence of previous non visible htaccess that might be overwritten or something.

for SSI to work, it might require some code in the htaccess unless its included in httpd.conf by default

Sounds like you don't have an index.html file so the 404 in the htaccess is coming into play.
