They say two month's salary is a guideline. I think that's for people who don't make as much as we do. It also depends on your future spouse. Is she someone that needs the bling?

When we got engaged, I picked out my ring after he brought me a single diamond. It's got channel set diamonds on the side of the center stone and I went with something a little bigger than a half carat for the center stone. Any bigger and I'd break it off all the time. I'm a gardener and I'm remodelling my whole house by myself. I'm usually neck deep in drywall, dirt or grout around here. I can't see myself wearing a huge rock. It's a nice thought, but not really practical.

I think that our set (his, my engagement ring and the wedding band that comes with it) was about $3500. We went with gold instead of platinum, but if you wanted platinum that would bring it up to about $5k

Depends on the taste. Personally I would rather spend the full two months salary on something else. I would like something white or platinum with a diamond if that even. However, I would like to find that at the bottom of a Louis Vuitton or Chanel bag :P

who ever got that 2months line? we dont have there in EU... anyhow anything with a nice rock and some gold isnt gonna be less then 3-4k. Unless you pick a flawed stone.

Who here was a diamond expert again?

Spending lots on weddings and parafernalia around it is only for people who have to convince each other and others of their love.

Bout $60 for the cheapest gold band there is. Spend the money on other things like live vacations, boats, toys..... 2nd thought, why even get married? Gonna have kids is the only reason I can think of.

Dont spend more than you can afford to lose (ever wear a ring at a beach?). Dont start a marriage broke or in the hole or based on materialistic offerings. And don't even think for a second that a diamond is required to make her "want" to marry you. The luckiest man gives his heart and an affordable symbolic ring or "band" upon which their love will hopefully out last.

Prob about $20K. Just make sure to have it appraised and insured.

I'd buy a fake diamond and she'll never know... unless shes' superficial and takes it to get appraised when you give it to her, a friend of mine's girlfriend did that and he broke up with her for it... I agree 100% with his decision. they look the same btw

Agree. It was for those that think kids should have a mother and father that are married. All in all that might be best, but not required. Only if the relationship is stable though.

I would imagine most people do get it appraised since they insure their rings, at which point, she would find out. Now to break up with someone over that is a little excessive, but most people would find out I imagine.

The mark up is soooo high!

I would buy a loose stone and pick or design my own ring!
Anything to not get so ripped off!

Diamonds are a girls best friend :-)
It should be a special ring, not how expensive it is or was.

No CZ's, heh

Well I just engaged a few weeks ago and had the ring about a month before that. I went with a ring that had a total of 16 diamonds on it. The bigger center diamond was .88 cts. Then had 2 smaller ones on the side of that one. Then down the band was the rest of the diamonds. I didn't goto a mall place or anything, went to an actual jeweler. I ended up spending a few more grand then I was hoping to but it looks damn nice. I don't believe in that 2 month BS. Maybe if you hardly make anything but no way I would spend that much. I would rather use that for something we can actually use.

But honestly, why? Are you so materialistic? Or is your relationship so superficial you need rings to prove your love for each other?

Hey Brad! My brother just went shopping and we were amazed at how confusing it is. Finally he chatted with a really knowledgable rep and was expained the differences. He ended up spending about $7k on a diamond and platinum. He set out to spend a little less, but when he started to get educated about durablity quality etc, it started to make sense for him to spend a little more. It was what he could afford and a quality that will last. My suggestion based on his experience is to do what you are doing ask questions, get educated as best you can and you will make the right choice i am sure.

not because of the diamond, because it reminds me what a great guy he is, and it reminds me of the commitment we made to eachother. The ring itself is just icing on the cake - the decision to spend so much was his... he even wanted to get me a bigger ring which i passed on.

Ya, def ask questions about the 4 c's and make sure they tell you about the difference between them all. Also look for a certified diamond.

I honestly would not want a diamond. There are so many other beautiful precious stones out there. I would be happy with something that took some thought and reflects our relationship. A ruby or sapphire perhaps. Or just a simple claddagh would be fine.

When my wife and I walked out of the jewelry store she stopped in mid stride and said to me, "We could have bought a small car for that amount". All together I spent $18,000 on engagement and wedding rings.

... and it was worth every penny.

WG,
the fit she threw because of it was what made us all say "wtf"
HE had saved all his money to buy a condo, and give her a decent wedding and she flipped out because her ring didn't cost 3k it cost 500... pretty pathetic if you ask me.

People spend way too much on ring and all the junk that goes with the wedding. More people want the wedding than the marriage and forget it is the marriage that is meant to be the most valuable. If the love is real I wouldn't even care if I didn't have a ring as long as we were together.

Two month salary? Are you insane! I even wouldn't pay 1 month salary. You can get a decent ring for around 2-3K$, that's more than enough! The last thing I want to spend money on is the ring around my future wife's hand.

Just a heads up but it was the lie she was freaked out about.

Go for a low quality diamond. You can save a few k and still get one that impresses the friends and shows you care. The jewelers all try to move you up in quality and clarity. Why? They look the same. Resale value(there is none) should not be an overriding factor.

i paid 4500 for my feonsays engagement ring
shes happy with it, its big enuff where people notice it and compliment her on it, but not where its 2 big and people consider it "gaudy"

honestly anything over like 5k i consider overkill.. i mean its a ring for crying out loud
