Knowing that wouldn't make me an intellectual, it would make me a trivia buff, much like expecting someone in Canada to know the names of any US politicians.

If there was some type of turmoil in Canada you can bet their PM's name would be all over the news and common knowledge in the US. However as they seem to be taking care of their own country quite well there's little reason to know about their political scene.

Ah but the people in Canada ARE expected to know US politicans. I understand that not everyone has an interest in politics or world affairs but just because you aren't hearing about something on the news (especially American network news) doesn't mean it isn't important to you. Over here in the UK as an American living abroad I knew Osama's name years before most Americans because the US Embassy under Clinton (not a political point just dating it) was issuing warnings for citizens abroad. Just because you (general you) didn't know his name doesn't mean he wasn't important to you.

However, again, it just comes down to wanting to be fairly smart. I don't use all that much of what I learned in science class in high school but I am glad I know it and now and then the basics of it come in handy.

Sarah_Jayne 08-31-2005 12:04 PM

oh and not to mention that if people actually knew about the rest of the world and our place in it and how our gov't interacts with it then there would be some better informed voters out there and that effects everyone.

Beejeebers 08-31-2005 12:07 PM

Well written post. I'm not american and I don't care what they do or think, it's up to them. Everyone is going to have opinions but just because someone disagrees with yours, that doesn't make them anti-american.

What happened during the tsunami? Wasn't even a day after it happened and the anti-US trolls were bitching about the US not sending enough money fast enough. WW2 it's either we didn't start helping fast enough or we are evil because we blew up japan to end the war. Now we have a natural disaster which has effectively shut down a major US city and displaced at least 1 million people, yet we don't need any help because everyone in America is rich.

It's quite funny how we are anti-everyone else according to you, but how often do we see posts from US webmasters bitching about what all the other countries do?

Yet not a day goes buy that we don't see some dumb fool bitching about Bush or bitching about the US for this or that reason. When was the last time you heard any US webmasters bitching about Denmark or what your leaders do? When was the last time you heard a US webmaster bitching about England or their leaders? Or really how often do you ever hear us bitching about Canada? Other than they look and talk funny?

Yet everyday on GFY we have webmasters from those countries bitching about us or our govt or what Bush did today, yet somehow we are anti-everyone else. You seem to blame us for everything our govt does yet do you really have control of what your govt does? If I seem to remember all three of the above listed countries are in Iraq helping our govt take over a country based on lies.

So you fucktards want to bitch about the US going into Iraq, then bitch about your own fucking leaders for helping our country do it. You are nothing but hypocrites.

Did you see Americans bitching about the people in London when you had all those bombings not so long ago? Did we bitch and make fun of the people in Spain when they were bombed? Did we bitch and make fun of all the people affected by the Tsunami? Yet what do we get in return?

We are the center of our own damn universe because quite honestly, what you do doesn't matter to us. We don't live our lives worrying about what you do. Maybe you should try the same.

It's about time someone put it like that!! Great Post!!! :thumbsup

Speaking for myself... not for the rest of the world, I'd just like to say that to you small percentage of American bigots with your holier than though BS can all take a long walk off a short pier.

So what?
Most people hate Bush. Does that make us anti-American? No.
Not everyone jumped within 24 hours to send the US money it doesn't need for a hurricane. Does that make us anti-American? No.
Many of us don't agree with the US invading a nation based on several lies. Does that make us anti-American? No.

Get over yourselves. Seriously. You guys come here with your "if you're not one of us, you against us" crap.

The TRUTH of the matter is... we're not anti-American. We're anti-YOU and your "we're the center of the universe" BS.

We're not anti-American. YOU are anti-everyone else. You obviously hate everyone... including half the people in your own country. You have issues. Not us. And constantly chirping your mouths off just makes the rest of Americans look bad when the truth is, the world really does like most of them.

To all you anti-world losers, I say to you as you say to us... "KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF" :glugglug

that is one of the best posts I have ever seen here on GFY!

As much as it pains me to agree with what amounts to an inane post, there is actually a great deal of truth in that one line. However therein lies the problem of America being the so called "bad guys". People always want to knock the top dogs down.

However, what Stuart said is very true, the majority of us "regular" people dont hate Americans in general, far from it. We hate your president, his administration and other aspects of your society (you fuckers gave the world Country music :( ), but thats about it.

According to who? My Canadian friends have never once mentioned anything about US politics and I've never asked them. I would assume for most of them it's essentially inconsequential since (A) it has no direct bearing on them and (B) any indirect bearing it has on them, they can do little about since they don't live in the US and have no ability to vote in the elections here.

While I would find it hard to believe that anyone in a populated region of the North American continent hasn't heard of the name of the US president by now I think that lies more with the news media than any significant need for them to know what's going on with their southern neighbor's government.

I agree with you on the part of the news networks not reporting all the 'big stories'. To an extent they are media publishers just as the webmasters here are, and most of what is published is what will keep an interest and generate ad revenue, which is usually what is most easily understood by the typical viewer. Much of which has no real significant bearing on anyone's life but makes for an entertaining anecdote. Criticize it all you want, however that's what makes them sales and without the sales they can't report on much of anything.

What you learned in high school science class tought you basic information about the natural world around you and helped you hone your mind to think in a critical manner. Some aspects of what you learned there probably helped you to grasp html programming more readily than an untrained mind would have been able to, etc.

Learning the names of politicians - who aren't even your own representatives - does not help you in that matter. Your science and logic classes may help you become more intelligent for when you are reading about what they are doing, the form of government used in that country, or how the ideals of that government might interact with your own, but the knowledge of what their name is is not going to make you or anyone else smarter, and the lack of that knowledge does not make them less smart. IMO, it's essentially trivial to anyone not involved with those individuals directly.

The wack jobs and loudmouths of gfy don't represent the US.

They think they do, but their ambitions are empty.

CherryLipsRosa 08-31-2005 02:10 PM

Very interesting post! I guess every side is entitled to their opinion as long as we are not generalized as haters.

fuzzypeach 08-31-2005 03:41 PM

This is coming from a Candian's POV...

I don't hate Americans but I do hate:

The American president.

The American "I'm better than you" mentality.

The American "I'm jealous of you" mentality.

The American "bigger is better" mentality. Just because I drive a car does not mean I cannot afford an SUV, lol!

The American "if you're not with us, you're against us" mentality. Thank Bush for that.

The violence in America. But then again, I've always had a morbid fear of a group of black guys :1orglaugh

The hypocrisy of the US! The US should abide by the UN all of the time or none of the time - not only when it benefits them. The US should abide by the Geneva Conventions all of the time or none of the time - not only when it benefits them (see http://www.hrw.org/press/2002/01/us011102.htm).

The small group of Americans that squish me when I'm flying or watching a movie. If you're fat then buy 2 tickets so you can sit by yourself and your other self instead of pushing half of your fat on my side of the seat :1orglaugh

The fear of guns in the States. In Canada, we have NO FEAR of guns. In the States, I always wear comfortable shoes in case I got to run :upsidedow

Joking aside... most Canadians don't hate Americans in general. Heck, I live a few minutes north of the US and ALMOST live like an American. The difference here is that *most* Canadians are not fat and are humble.

PS: Americans should learn to blend in when they travel. Don't act like assholes when you come up north - just because things are different in the States doesn't mean it's better or worse :Oh crap Just because our portions are smaller, our gas is cheaper, our TV and radio channel selection sucks, our girls are hotter, our clothes are smaller, our food is milder, our money is coloured, our real estate is expensive, our roads are maintained, our public transportation system works, our homeless people have creative signs, our health system is practically free, our towns are clean, our taxes are high, our lotteries are small, our traffic jams have 80 cars, our highways have only 4 lanes going BOTH ways, and the fact that we have no idea what collargreens or grits is let alone how to spell it DOES NOT MEAN WE SUCK :thumbsup

Michaelious 08-31-2005 03:42 PM
