Do you have a home gym or work out at home or in your office?

Okay, I know I spend more time sitting at a computer and less time working out than I would prefer, but going to a gym is not very convenient. I'd like to buy one or two setups intended to take up just part of a room. No free weights and nothing that requires a building permit.

Who out there works out on something like this? Brands or setups or online stores that any of you all would recommend?

I know I'm not alone on this.

We once had a total gym, but it mostly made a good coat rack. And trying to put those things away you have to be really careful not to chop your fingers off in the parts.

Just stay clear of the total gym! haha

I have free weights and a whole bench set up at home, I never use it though. I have to go to the gym or nothing gets done. Using your own weight as resistance is always good, get the excersize ball and some dumbells and you can do awesome squats and pretty much everthing else with that simple set up.

I have stair climber and free weights. But I have to go to the gym to really get the workout I'm looking for. At first it was really inconvenient for me, but I just made it a part of my daily routine and now I can't imagine not going.

There is no magic pill, no magic 5-minute workout, no $5000 operation or anything else that will get you in shape but busting your ass in the gym. 99 out of 100 people with home/office gym equipment are out of shape and there's a reason for that. If working out and making fitness a priority in their lift isn't "inconvenient enough" they could as well forget about working out entirely.

Both actually.....have an exercise bike as well as a set of freeweights and a bench, as well as a gym at my apartment complex that has about 10 machines, treadmills, exercise bikes, and stair climbers. Try to either work out at home here or go to the gym 4-5 times a week, but more often than not I go to the gym as it's just easier to stay focused there and it offers a nice break from the day's routine. Does wonders for stress as well as overall health. If you're looking for decent home equipment with commercial gym quality, I have always thought Precor makes good stuff.

I have a gym at home, it hasn't been used in quite some time. A gym membership for me was also a good investment at one time.

Frankly the equipment or access to equipment is worthless if your head isn't in the right place. Fitness is a state of mind, not a way to simply fill a void in a schedule.

I've always worked out more to gain muscle and the weight takes care of itself when I can work out regularly. I broke my ankle last fall and the healing process was not so smooth, so I've gotten pretty out of shape.

I'v been packing on some LB's myself.. I don't have any workout equipment in my home so I go running everyday, but that may not be a good solution for you if your ankle is still giving you problems.

Have you considered Yoga? I hear it's a great low impact workout

Actually, I am fortunate in that I build muscle pretty fast when I can work out regularly. I just want a more convenient way to do it.

Please provide a link to your stats on fitness of people who work out in convenient locations. If the equipment is simply not up to the task, I wouldn't want to waste my effort, but I've never heard a stat like that before.

Ooh, thanks for the link! I was hoping for something more compact, but one of those might totally fit what I am looking for well enough.

I hate machines, so I have free weights, a bar, a cage and a set of hex dumbbells for quick transitions. Of course, thats over 1000lbs sitting on my floor, good thing it's in my basement. Got a stationary bike and an elliptical. Sadly, the gay elliptical is actually harder to use then the bike... but I still prefer the bike because I can do a longer, low intensity cardio on it.. the elliptical wears me out too fast.

Yeah, I don't think I will be running any time soon.

Yoga might be a good idea, but I sort of like picking up heavy things and putting them down again.

Working out at your house id a bad idea, it's to hard to change mind sets.

Going to gym is best, start going everyday and even better wake up an hour early and sleep less. Then go to the gym every morning that's when all the hotties are there flexin buns.

Watching hotties flexin buns would be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much like work.

What would be harder about working out at home, other than the issue of getting the right tools for it?

We used to have a weight machine here at home, but we sold it before me moved cross country. Talked about getting a new one, but instead we bought one of those pilates balls and some free weights.

I do balance and core exercises on it as well as crunches and some back exercises. My husband does pushups on the ball and uses it as a weight bench with the free weights. Apparently a lot of people are going to the ball instead of a weight bench because the ball makes you keep your abs and obliques tight while you're lifting with your chest and arm muscles.

I bought the ball at a sports store nearby for about $20. Worth a try.

Oh.. and I also sometimes use it as a chair in my office when I'm typing a lot. Balancing on the ball requires you to work your core muscles while you're just sitting at your desk. I'm still a long way away from abs of steel, but I'm getting there.

yes, swimming is excellent if you can do it at least 3 times a week.

i ride my bike outdoors around the same circuit 8 miles every single day and in winter jump on small trampoline and also jump rope indoors. i work it so it gives me a negative 400 calories each day---this allows a nice dessert after supper.

you might be surprised to see how much you need to exercise to burn off a certain amount of calories:

http://www.fhma.com/calories.htm

the resistance machines are good for building muscle, but not so good for aerobics which i think is very important if you are sedentary most of the day and then exercise for 45min-1hr.

but ANY exercise is better than none.

I like the Bowflex feature where you can put it away so easily, but I'm wondering how good a workout it is really possible to get on it.

If working out and making fitness a priority in their lift isn't "inconvenient enough" they could as well forget about working out entirely.
Dammit...I guess I should throw out my "Seven Minute Abs" video tape then

if you don't have a home gym, might as well try taebo video.

I enjoy playing badminton every weekend. Rather than doing work out.

Heya! Pretty good except for spending too much time sitting at a computer. Treadmill and pool sounds nice

I went ahead and ordered the Bowflex, but they are telling me it is going to take like two months to get to me in Los Angeles, so I might tell them to stuff it and get something else.

i go to a swanky gym where they have ppl who load my weights for me and spot me and i play tennis there as well.... its a great excuse to get out of the homeoffice, and they make it so nice, you could spend hours there relaxing and playing...

Maybe if there were a gym withing walking distance where they kept it pretty dark and had live rock bands. I like to get dressed up to go to nice restaurants. When I want to work out, that is the last thing I feel like doing. Somehow I think there might be a market for what I would want on that in Los Angeles
