Are redirects really bad.

At the moment my index page redirects to a php page, is this a bad thing or can search engines deal with this. Should I put text on the redirect page?

Just wondering how to fix this, I've put some text on the entry page and a link to the main page, but left the re-direct on.

I suppose i'd better start working on a new entry page
