Did you ever wonder why salmon cans are tapered and tuna cans are not?

I've always wondered; I just ran across this today.

13. Why are salmon cans tapered?
Salmon cans are tapered to conserve space. When empty, the tapered cans are nested like paper coffee cups. Tapered cans require much less space to store and ship than cans that cannot be nested. Space is an important issue when shipping salmon cans to the remote locations of the salmon canneries, particularly in Alaska where everything must be shipped in by barge.

no, if they were any other shape it would be possible for them to fit through

and they are much easier to roll around when needed

The rolling makes sense; those suckers are heavy! Except I think you meant impossible to fit through? I don't see why I couldn't go through a square or hexagonal hole just as easily.

No, it's a geometry type thing

if manholes and manhole covers were square and a big truck ran over it and cocked it up and turned it on its side it's possible for it to fall in, thus leaving a big dangerous hole

round ones can't do that, it's physically impossible

I think that's more of an after-the-fact observation, and it's not entirely true. You can make a perfectly square manhole (or any other shape) in which the cover wouldn't be able to fall through. To make the example easy to imagin, here's an extreme:

A (insert shape here) manhole the size of Texas covering a 1-inch diameter hole. The manhole cover can be any shape you want -- it isn't gonna fall through that hole.

i grew up in the fishing industry in alaska and i do not remember ever seeing a tapered can for salmon. historically they weren't. if that is the case now, it is a fairly recent thing. very few places even can salmon anymore.

I would think one reason they wouldn't use them is because they would need alot more material to do the same thing and prevent it from falling thru. Also they wouldn't be easy to roll

I've never seen a tapered salmon can, and I buy a lot of it, different stores and different brands.
