Pride vs UFC

I've been a long time fan of the UFC. Since watching Royce Gracie and his hour long fights with Ken Shamrock. Since back when they would have a 500 lb guy fighting a 22 lb guy. Lots of fighting legends have come out of the UFC, theres no doubt about it.

I've never bothered to watch Pride fights for the longest time. I always had the impression it was low rent trailer trash. I was wrong! Wrong in a major way!

Tonight I picked up Pride Championship Chaos II.

It's GREAT!

The fighting is more action packed and the fighters are very skilled. Some UFC fighters crossed over in Pride. Don Fry as one of them in this DVD.

I own a lot of UFC DVD's, and now I have to say if I were forced to choose between two DVD's on the rack, I'd probably get the Pride disc first.

Now the question is, if Pride and UFC had an all out cross battle, who would have the most fighters winning the matches?

The question of the ages..

I understand there is some talk of a UFC against Pride championship..anyone have the skinny?

hmmmm...

the rules are different and the ufc features a cage while pride uses a ring.

to answer your question with a non-answer--it depends.

the pride heavyweights would massacre the ufc heavies. pride features fedor ( unquestionably the best hw in the world right now), nogueira, cro-cop and kharitonov amongst others. the only ufc heavy that could hang with those guys is andrei arlovski.

the lhw division (what pride calls their mw division) is a bit closer. ufc has liddell and couture to match up with wanderlei silva, alistair overeem, ricardo arona, igor vovchanchyn, ninja, shogun and a few others. pride is much deeper but both couture and liddell could certainly contend for the mw championship. although when the ufc sent liddell over to pride to compete in the mw grand prix he was destroyed by rampage jackson.

the ufc is much better in the 185 and especially the 170 pound divisions simply because up until recently pride only featured the hw and lhw divisions.

as i said, each has its strengths and weaknesses. i personally prefer pride because with the popularity of mma in japan the pride organization can offer fighters much more money, thereby drawing better fighters. and the ring is much better than the cage in that it doesn't favor one type of fighter over another.

if you love pride check out the new ppv this sunday. it features the finals of the mw grand prix (silva v arona, overeem v shogun, winners meet in the finals) in addition to THE hw fight everyone has been waiting to see--fedor emalianenko vs. mirko filipovic. great card that you don't want to miss.

I agree with the comment about Fedor but I have say I believe Liddell and Couture are better than Silva. While I love the Axe Murderer, (and his pre-fight stare down would make any man wet themselves...repeatedly!) I believe that Couture or Liddell would have his number pretty quick. Remember how fast Vitor Belfort knocked him out? Any Vitor can't hang with Randy or Chuck.

Mirko Cro-cop rules !!! But Fedor Emilianenko is the best fighter of all, this would be an awesome fight to look at.

Vitor knocked out a VERY VERY GREEN Silva. It's a different story now.

But what do you know about MMA fighting? It's not like you are a NHB MMA Fighter or anything.

that loss to vitor was in 1998, man.

since then wanderlei has gone 24-2-1 with only a decision loss to tito ortiz and a questionable decision loss to heavyweight mark hunt. in that time he has wins over sakuraba (X3), dan henderson and rampage jackson (X2) amongst a host of others, not to mention a "draw" with current #3 heavyweight mirko filipovic.

chuck's resume' is incredible but the fact remains that he has fairly recent one-sided losses on his record. couture manhandled him in their first bout and rampage, the same rampage silva has massacred twice, badly outstruck chuck standing and then pounded him into submission on the ground.

Pride is better, they have the better talent pool and more interesting fights, although they could do with cutting out some of the Japanese cans they throw to top talent between big matches.

Pride fighters would definitely beat UFC fighters.

I prefer PrideFC.. I think it's more entertaining, the crowds are educated and the show time is great.
