Time limit for domain on hold? Help

There are some domain on hold for a long time that I'm curious how long can a domain put on hold until they're not allow to put on hold anymore and force to buy it or drop it?

Some domain are on hold for as long as 45 days and they keep on holding. Anyone know the maximum time limit allow to hold a domain?

I dont know of a limit, but I've seen register.com hold for more than 6 months before I gave up checking on it.

I let a domain registered with NSI expire, after I missed the window for transfering it. Figured I'd risk letting it drop, then register with someone else...they've been sitting on it now since August, 2001.

My partner finally got tired of waiting and has been calling NSI daily for the past couple of weeks...they keep telling her it will drop with the next bulk purge...we shall see...

Cheers,
Mishi

I have 2 domains that have been on hold over 2 years still.

Guess it can take a while for it to be dropped.
