How many servers do you think run GFY?

It gets some massive traffic... not just us whores that actually post here.

Is it just one 100mbit monster or a number of them?

I would imagine their mysql server alone must be a quad xeon with min 4 gigs of ram ...

definately not one.

It could use like someone said 4 xeons for the MySQL, or load balancing.

Don't need much space so I would think two quad xeons would do it on about a 10 meg connection.

Don;t know

Whatever amount of servers you think, double it. I'm always surprised at the server power behind some sites. For example, I heard a while back that nastydollars uses a server farm of 100+ servers for all of their sites.

That load balancing shit is crazy, google used to use thousands of crappy p3's, even p4's where out. But load balanced them all together some how. Still to this day they use most of those low grade servers.

This is a tough question to answer because we don't really know how much bandwidth that GFY burns though or the requirements of the vBulletin software when used on a server that has as many visitors as I suspect this site does.

Without that information, if I was asked to setup something similar to GFY, I'd probably suggest a load balanced, blade server configuration with a dedicated database server configuration.

The key would really be quality bandwidth though. Without a good link to the rest of the net, the site is going to seem overloaded because the pipe is full.

Just some random thoughts though - without a proper feasibility and requirements it's all a guess.

I've never heard that about goggle before. However, I know that well configured web servers can last a long time. If a server is configured well and optimized for the needs of the site, then the difference between a p3 and p4 don't amount to much.

The real cost in hosting is configuration and support. Sometimes, it is the best option to clone a second server with hardware that you know works well then use hardware that you're not sure about.

Yeah Google uses thousands and thousands of lowend servers in their farms. They have several fail every day and they just swap em out with new ones.

You work for a hosting company and think GFY could be hosted on a "Load Balance" on a 10meg connection

BTW, The word for "Load Balance" you are looking for is .. Cluster or Round Robin..

the most load here is mysql, by far. Each page of vBulletin pulls data via around 20 queries, some big, some small.

I would guess a farm of 4 load balanced xeon's would do the trick.

We run a 10 server load balanced ipvs cluster to handle less than the amount of traffic that GFY gets. A typical high end server can handle maybe 200-225 hps, im sure GFY gets 800-1100hps so i would guess 5-7 front end and 2 monster sql servers in the backend. But thats only my guess.
