Go into any CAA office; they should be able to provide you one.

Most countries want to see an International driver's licence, especially for renting cars.

There is no such thing as an International Drivers Licence.

International Driving Permits are issued by Auto Clubs and are only valid while you carry your current licence from wherever.

The "Permit" simply translates your licence for countries that don't speak your language.

In English speaking countries your Canadian licence would be fine by itself - just drop the "ey" off the end of every line.

He he

Not true.

An international drivers license is a goverment issued ID.
It is recommended for us in Denmark if we travel outside the EU and especially if we want to rent a car.
Its just a matter of going to the local authorities and have them issue the license.
I just looked this up a couple of days ago

Yes and no. Some country's issue international licenses which translate the original (I believe the US does). Others merely state that you have a valid license in your country of origin.

I'm not sure about the need to carry the original too (although I guess it couldn't hurt), since the point of an IDL is that they are accepted in many more countries than accept original licenses. Certainly I have never needed to show both.

The only problem I have ever run into (and it happened the only time I was ever asked for a license by the police) was that the guys on the spot simply didn't know what was legal and what wasn't. Fortunately they couldn't be bothered to try to find out, so they just let me go. Anyway the best procedure is to find out what the countries you are visiting accept and there are plenty of sites around with the details.

Check your facts dude.

You still have to have your current licence unless in Denmark it is issued by the same authority and if so it is just doing the same thing as the permit anyhow.

You're both right - they DO exist, and they are normally government issued (normally by whatever department issues normal driving licences), but they are usually worthless unless you have your normal driving licence with you. As NaughtyWhores says, they are just a translation of your regular licence into numerous different languages.

Most US traffic cops don't know this though - I've been stopped on a couple of occasions and, after presenting my British licence, have been told I need an international licence. After telling them what an international licence is they normally check and confirm this...

Thanks for the info. I know that my NY state license does not give me the right to drive in Latvia so I think I need an International license of some sort.

I used to get them thru CAA, but you dont really need them anymore. They will rent you a vehicle with your own state issued license

I got me an International License once few years ago but never used it. Driving in europian streets is not so easy.. small streets and lanes but people still drive like maniacs so i just took cabs instead. You really don't need an Int'l license thou if you have a valid Canadian license, most other countries will let you drive with your local license for the first 6 months of your visit.. same when you come to Canada from another country. However, international driver's license looks like crap and size of a passport, too big to carry in your walet. Will cost you about $15 I think. Any CAA can issue you one I think.

Call the consulate of the country you are traveling to and ask them if they require/recommend for you to have an intl drivers license. It just translate you DL into the language the cops can understand. I've never needed one and I've driven on every single continent.
