Wich Video editing software to use?

I'm looking for a cool video editing software.

like to add music, text (url at bottom) etc

I use virtualdub to compress it in divx format and music in mp3 but I need something to do the eye candy stuff.

Any suggestions?

I'd recommend Sony Vegas. Used it for a while and quite satisfied with it. Small and fast.

hands down, sony vegas

If you are new to doing video, this is the easiest to get comfortable with. Besides others like pinnacle to name one. But for quality and features, vegas.

you can export your raw or edited video to windows media, mpeg etc. There are conversion utils within the software already.

I use Pinnacle and I'm very satisfied with features it provides (well, for my needs) and it's very easy to use... The only thing I do in other program is format conversion.

I'm curious. Are there any programs, where I can edit the movie(nothing fance, just a logo, cut some parts etc) and then select all output formats I want, and press OK, and it will make WMV files for different speeds for example..

Also, are there any programs where I can EDIT WMV files? Most I have seen: You can edit MPEG and save as wmv. But you can not actually open wmv files and edit these.

Also from DV tape to HDD. What format is best to save(for me as backup) Best MPEG?(since I can not edit wmv files)

Thanks

Wow, I must be out of date. In my days it was Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro. I guess Sony Vegas is the new star.

Still I?d recommend a combination of Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere.

I like Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing and find it easy to learn and intuitive. A lot of people like Sony Vegas nowadays also, although I dont like the interface. Mac people usually use Final Cut Pro. All are good options for a full featured editing program.

To do batch encoding, or multiple output encoding, you need a separate (expensive) app like Cleaner XL, which is what I use, or Canopus Procoder 2.0 or Squeeze 4.1 Edit Suite

I agree whole heartedly there. If you can get Cleaner XL to work on XP SP2, use it. That program's golden!! Depending on what I am doing, I jump back and forth in Premiere & Prem Pro. I like them both, Pro's better for a lot of reasons, but just haven't been able to completely phase out 6.0 for some things.

They are both good for just about anything you need or want to do, easy to use. Drawback w/ 6.0's the stability. Sometimes will crash for now reason.

As for the WMV, I do not use that format, so I honestly can't help you there. I use code website/clip final product in either xvid/divx depending. Most of the time it's divx because it gives me the best quality (imho) for the clips. I'e tried all formats, and just prefer it. Not to say it's nessesarily the best.

After I pull from DV, I always keep the master copy as a DV AVI. Again, this is my preference in comparison to MPG, or some other format. I think it gives the best quality when I burn them to DVD. I've tinkered with some of the others some time ago, but just have not found anything that has such a remarkable difference to change.

From what I've heard, all programs mentioned are good. A lot of it just depends on what you are trying to do, ease of use, comfortablity with it, used to (old schoolers) and so on.

Sony Vegas is real popular. For encoding I really love Canopus Procoder.

I don't know about Vegas specifically, but there is more than one program that can simply convert one compressed end user format like mpeg-1 to another like wmv. Smart Video Converter is one such program. Of course the result is never going to look great- mpegs and wmv's aren't meant to be converted or edited even though I see webmasters asking about this over and over on GFY. I guess they bought content and that's all they have to work with...

I wont upgrade my pc to SP2 because I need cleanerXL. I accidentally did it once and the shit wouldnt work. Had to rollback.

Well the quality part sucks, I had a feeling that would be a problem. I am trying to reduce bandwidth usage by converting all my mpegs to wmv and I don't want to have to re edit everything. I just downloaded "Window Media Encoder" but when I choose a source to start the process it just sits there and thinks with an hour glass forever. Thanks for the tip on "Smart Video Converter".

XOXOXO

I have my two Win Xp machines still running SP1 for the same reason, since SP2 can cause (small, fixable) problems with Premiere Pro andI have heard also with Cleaner XL. I figure that when I need to start filming in hi-def I will need a faster pc to edit with anyway and then I will be forced to upgrade to SP2 in order to use HDV with the Premiere Pro plug-in.
