Merida Mexico

I heard you can get cable modems in Merida now. Are they reliable?

Moving there in a month.

that's near cancun... on the yucatan right? I hear it's amazing... My spanish teacher in highschool was from there... she said the cave diving is out of this world.

be sure to let us know what we are missing!

ps ... why did you decide to move there?

Yep.

Because I can buy a 200+ year old colonial hacienda amongst Mayan ruins on a white sandy beach for an almost ludicrous price.

Not too mention the obvious tax benefits, the fact that everything is so damn cheap, and the people are friendly.

I see listings all the time for rentals that are less than 300 a month, and Merida being the capital of the Yucatan, its a decent sized city (800k people). Lowest crime rate in Mexico. Why live in cold ass Detroit when Mexico is so close and you basically double your $$$ and live like a god?

Realistically I will live in Detroit for 6 months, and return to Mexico for 6 months out of the year.

Oh the joy of being self employed and only needing an internet connection.

tax rate is 32% but with a good accountant, you get to write off everything, and no one gives a fuck about it, either

Good deal, near easter i'm gonna have an offshore co. ready, tax rate close to 0% and with $15k if you want you can even become resident of the island. I don't know how this can be possible for a us. citizen, but here it's not a problem. It would be great working from such a place at least some months every year. The problem is that in most of them you'll end up dealing with pathetic dialups....

I'm sure [Labret] has more links than I, when it comes to real state.

there is one thing I can tell you, it's really cheap living here, I pay $60 a month for my house, I'm looking to rent next door's house, $100 a month for a house with a pool and a little gest room at the back...

cheap enough?

it's legal for US citizens... but you have to move a lot of money thru the account for it to be worth the expenses incurred (like the 15k$ but they nickel and dime you from there with 20$ fees for bank statements and on and on)....

the only time it becomes illegal in the US is if you bring the money back into the country with out paying taxes on it.

typically a person in the US that uses a carribbean account...has a credit card from the bank that they take cash advances from US ATM's....because the US Gov't can't connect a cash transaction taken on a foreign bank's bank card with a person....with out getting that information from the foreign bank.

islands like - grenada and turks and caicos - don't interact with the US - and so they don't answer US subpeonas to turn over client information.

But why would you want to do this? the taxes we pay - make it possible to fight terrorism, build schools (which we've all attended), and drive on the road ways....the list goes on...

esentially the taxes we pay make it possible to live in a great society. the trade off of moving to a tax haven...as SexHound found out...is that you have to live in a developing nation ... with poor infrastructure (ie hard to find dsl, dirty streets, nasty women, and no doors on your apt)

~Brett

i know the purpose of the taxes, but I don't intend to pay taxes for money i earn from abroad and i'm going to spend here (and pay taxes on the goods and services), while the rest find ways not to pay taxes for the money they earn inside borders. Most of these islands have agreements with many countries in order to avoid double taxation. If they money are taxed there, cannot be taxed in your country. I'm checking this parameter at the moment. If you know something more about this please contact me or post it here

Most of the links I have found for real estate in the general area I am going to are geared more towards short term rentals and are not cheap. They know you are a sucker American and you will pay ridiculous prices.

What I did was just to get into contact with the American expatriates that live in the area you want to go to and have them hook you up. Tons of resources online for expatriates.
