Is cogent really that bad?

It seems like cogent has grown alot through acquisition the last couple of years.

Are they really that bad or is that just the company line from people who can't match the price?

I could, sure. However trying it yourself is risking part of your business on what could be a slow and shitty network, so I thought I'd do some research.

nothing wrong with cogent.. it was kinda shady back when it first started because with the prices they offered for the time you never knew if it was a company that was going to get up and haul ass out of the country and leave customers high and dry..

they are just as good as most other bandwidths, its worth the money.

It's horrible, we used to have it until we got complaints everyday and canned it. I wouldn't touch it or Verio if my life depended on it.

Think about, cognet costs $1000 for a dedicated 100 meg line.

Verio costs $1700+ for a dedicated line.

Normal bandwidth costs $4000+ for a dedicated 100 meg line.

There is a reason for this.

Good luck,

actually, its a arguement that has never had any good fucking points, sure there is other bandwidths that are direct in to UUNet or other major backbones, But cogent has grown to get very good connections in to alot of major suppliers and are good for the money.

We used them 18 mths - 2 years back now so I can't comment on their performance / stability now ... but back then they prolly would have been fine for plain www / HTML page and images type traffic but for real time systems like ours, forget about it ... they had major routing issues and horrific network latency ... that combined with crappy support was why we ditched them.

I know Cogent is crap it's not my oppinion. It's not a mystery why either. Simply put they use less pops (network stations) so your connection has to bounce around 2-3 times as much to reach it's destination. This also create more points of failure and possible latency. And they don't pay their bill to the hops they have half the time. Once they a major pop that led to LA was blocked from cogent because they didn't pay their bill. All connections to LA through cogent where dead. If you have to use them them use a quality provider and cogent in a blend then atleast when they fuck up and they will you have a reall connection to get you through.

Also keep in mind the main reason why surfers leave websites is when they are too slow. It's more important then design and content!

I wouldn't put my TGP galleries on Cogent or Verio.

uunet is actually one of the best because they pay more to use more pops. In fact they might have the most connections on their network then anyone.

The shit you are thinking of goes through probably three resellers before it gets to you.

Anybody who's paying $4000 for a 100meg line is getting ass raped with no lube.

That being said you obviously have an agenda here because you're selling something other than the product I'm asking about.

While I appreciate your feedback you can stop jumping on everyone who disagrees with you and telling them they're wrong now. You only get one vote here

HAHAHAHA!!!

OMFG man, no wonder you hate cheap bandwidth.

I just checked out the prices on your site and you want $7641 per month for a 40mbps pipe.

Do you have ANY customers at those prices? And if you do, what do you do at night when I'm sleeping?

Cogent is fine really and we should all thank them for pushing bandwidth prices way down for us.. or we'd still be paying 3-5 bucks a gig.

That's true. Even if they do suck they did force all the other providers to stop ass raping us on the price.

So basically you blame the free hosted gallery on Cogent?

it used to have close to 0 connectivity towards aol users, now it has improved a lot. Webmasters should thank cogentco for the competiiton it brought that made the bandwidth prices to go down. These are not my words, but coming from several people in the hosting business.

cogent is a great bang for the buck, no doubt about it. sure you're going to see some latency difference between them and some of the big boys, but generally not enough to justify the cost difference.

I have servers with both, just have to use the right screw for the right bolt ;)

I used to think Cogent was acceptable. I now have changed my mind. Their routing is very bad. I caught a massive problem with *'s hitting a couple days ago. They should have routed around that, but didn't. You think cogent is good because you don't track through their routing and peering - you don't know what they're doing when you're not looking. Just because your line works doesn't mean the network works well.

haha yeah I guess they are to blame for starting that trend too.

Now, just to clarify my position on Cogent:

Its fine in an intelligently routed mix with other providers. I wouldn't trust anything that makes me money to just a single homed Cogent line though.

They really have saved all of us a ton of money though by lowering prices across the board.. even if you've never used them at all. Competition is good.
