HDV is an absolute shit format

The MPEG2 compression cannot keep up with fast changes in the picture like medium pans and flashes from still cameras.

It does look great if you keep the camera still and are in ideal lighting though.

Panasonic will be out with a real HD camera in about 4 months that shoots DVCPro HD.

Of course most poeple will be using these HDV cams and it will be interesting to see how bad all this "HD" footage (shot on HDV) looks like when people actually start delivering HD DVDS and people watch them on their big screen TVs. I bet a lot of people are gonna be pissed with all the out of focus shots and blocky artifacts

Like I said, HDV CAN LOOK GOOD but you have to know the limitations of the format and shoot acordingly but you still risk long dropouts because it uses GOP so every time you have a drop out you lose 15 frames instead of just one.

Is anyone editing HDV on FCP? If yes then is it a breeze or is it super slow to render it like on other programs?

Greg... all I can say is... "WOW"

I downloaded the Ultra-HD on my 1280 X 1024 and the quality looked absolutely incredible... I am not even running DVI either... just a normal analog flat screen monitor at it's maximum (native) resolution.. 64 meg PCI graphic card

I can only imagine what that would look like if I streamed it through my HD box and onto my HDTV... some outstanding work, it was however the first time I thought 3 megs/second was slow in a long while... LOL

Believe it or not, in good light the new cheapo HC1 is actually sharper than the FX1/Z1. I shot about 10 hours on it so far and it is in fact sharper. It sucks balls in low light though and the gain tears the picture apart.

That sample Greg posted is excatly how the camera should be used - very slow movements and make sure the subject is in good light all the time.

Give it time. It's still a very new medium... people will need to learn the limitations of the new format the same way they learned the limitations of CCDs vs. film and videocameras vs. 8/16mm.

I'm sure we'll be seeing good quality stuff coming out as the norm within a couple years. Doesn't take long for the true professionals to get up to speed.
