A woman who ran a Web site that showed women stripping has been sentenced to four years in prison in China's first cyberporn criminal case, state media reported Monday.

Wang Yanli was sentenced Friday by the Feng County People's Court in the eastern province of Jiangsu on charges of organizing the showing of pornography, the newspaper Beijing News reported.

She was accused of opening chat rooms and charging annual fees of up to 600 yuan ($72) to watch online videos of women taking their clothes off, the report said.

Every day, more than 90 people would enter the chat rooms to watch, it said.

China has launched a crackdown on Web sites deemed pornographic and is encouraging the public to call in with tips.

Authorities have arrested more than 300 people since mid-July and shut down 700 China-based Web sites, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

China encourages Internet use for business and education and has 87 million people online. But Beijing's leaders worry that it also could spread criticism of communist rule and give the public access to material deemed obscene or subversive.

Amnesty International reports that as of January 2004 at least 54 people had been detained in China for discussing political beliefs on the Internet.

11 jailed over net porn in China

Eleven people have been jailed for up to 12 years for running an obscene website in China's largest case of internet pornography, a state newspaper says.

The sentences were handed down on Friday by the Hefei intermediate court in the central province of Anhui, the People's Court Daily said.

Wang Yong and Shao Rong were described as the main operators of the website www.99bbs.com, also known as the 99 Sex Forum. The website was set up in 2002 and run from an overseas server, the report said.

Apart from posting pornographic pictures, videos and stories, the website had chatrooms and information on prostitution throughout China, it said.

In November 2004 the website had nearly 76,000 registered users and had earned some 220,000 yuan ($A35,420), the report said.

In July 2004, China launched a crackdown on internet porn with new rules allowing courts to pass life sentences on those convicted of posting pornography online.

The crackdown reflects growing concerns not just about the negative influence of the internet on youngsters but also the general ethical standards of the nation's youth.

China terminates 700 sites in porn crackdown

China's crackdown on pornograhy is gathering pace following reports that 700 Web sites have been shut down and 220 people arrested as authorities try to censor XXX sites.

Last month China announced plans to crack down on adult websites with officials claiming that the "rampant" increase in online porn is damaging the moral fabric of the nation - and young people in particular.

One official said that porn "severely damaged social style, polluted the social environment, and harmed the physical and psychological health of the young people".

With half of China's 87m Net users under 24, the latest reports suggest that many young people are using the Net to learn about sex because information is hard to come by.

While the Government is considering improving sex education, it's also using technology to block access to sites and arresting those peddling porn.

Last month Chinese websites, ISPs and other Internet-related organisations were "invited" to sign a self-discipline pact to prevent the spread of anti-government information, porn and anything else that might threaten "national security (and) social stability".

China closes 1,129 porn web sites

China has closed 1,129 pornographic web sites since the nationwide crackdown began this July, according to Internet Society of China (ISC) in Beijing Wednesday.

Since the web site, www.china.cn was opened June 10 by the ISC, it has received 95,000 reports of pornographic and other illegal web sites.

The related departments have closed 1,278 illegal web sites and114 sites promoting gambling, superstitious activities and cult propaganda according to the information provided by the informers.

With the closures, the on-line reports on the illegal web sites have declined to 17.4 percent from 67 percent when the crackdown began.

The government will now shift its focus to other illegal web sites including those for gambling and superstitious activities.

China's Ministry of Public Security rewarded a number of informers since China launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on the illegal on-line operations. Their information has also helped to uncover 254 criminal cases and capture 445 suspects.

China 'Net cafe crackdown

Rulers of the world's second-largest online population have said they didn't want their people viewing "morally objectionable" content on the Web and they weren't kidding.

The AP reports today that China has closed 1,600 Internet cafes and fined operators a total of $12 million. Coming in just after the U.S., China has 87 million Internet users. The government encourages 'Net use for business and education, but prohibits violent video games, porn, most overseas media and pretty much everything else fun.

The AP says China has kept tabs on its 1.8 million Internet cafes, and in addition to those fined or shut, an additional 1,800 have been "ordered to stop operation for rectification." That doesn't sound good.

China Versus Porn: Round 2



According to reports from a government Internet watchdog, China has shut down about 1,287 websites that cater to harmful content - pornography, religious cults, gambling and superstition. Of these, 1,129 were porn sites while the remaining 114 promoted superstitious activities, gambling and cult doctrines.

The clean-up comes in response to public complaints made to the Internet center as a prelude to the campaign which originally begun in June this year. The authorities claim to continue cracking down on pornographic and other harmful websites, being their top priority.


According to reports, China's secondary concern is superstitious websites, which refers to religious sites that contain information on religious cults that are outside the government's control. Even the search engines are barred from directing and linking searches to such websites.

The authorities have reportedly urged the public and the industry to increase its political awareness and sense of responsibility towards such issues.

This is China's second major crackdown on porn, the first being around September after the community started its campaign in June.

China's Internet-savvy population amounts to about 87 million, approximately half of which are under the age of 24.

Don't know wasn't involved on this one. I would imagine months of research but who knows maybe a impulse idea. I knew that I don't speak Chinese so I hope I don't have to support their websites.

Not yet atleast, the world changes everyday some times more one day then another.
