Calling all investors - make money from hurricane katrina

Ok calling all investors, I am thinking of some short term plays for the louisiana flooding and insurance companies...

Share your ideas , because when the market opens on monday morning I am thinking of buying some put options on the insurance companies that cater to louisiana... Anyone know which companies are majors over there?

and thank god its not hitting central florida/south florida this time.. spreading the love... I went through 3 hurricanes last year, but this one looks really bad.

You'd be better off buying calls on petroleum.

OSX is an oil sector index. You can get option quotes for it at the CBOE.

The alternate symbol is OSZ.

My brother is cashing in on it. He works for a tree cutting company that does all the trees along the power lines here in Indiana, well he just left last night for storm emergency, he just called and said they are chilling in Alabama until Tuesday or Wednesday for it to pass thru and then they are heading into New Orleans. He's gonna be getting 16-20 hours a day making double time pay. He normally only makes like 10$ an hour but he is probably gonna end up making over 3-4 grand the next few weeks, which for him is an assload of money.

however...if you frame it as "how can I invest my money so as to help this area which needs it sooooo badly" it's another story...

profiting from providing needed services and investing in those services to get done is actually helping.....no?

PS: I hate price gougers, I got hit with it myself after Andrew and it's wrong...but someone looking to invest and help with all that work that's going to be needed that is ethical in their biz practices is ok in my book...

right on... without investors the companies that help people won't have money to provide the products/services, etc...

true, but you are looking to buy puts, which is more or less like saying 'I hope they go bankrupt over this, and I'll make ton of $$$'...

Suspect there will be plenty of opportunity for just manual labor after the storm passes.

Geeeze, I have a communications contractors license. Ahmmmmm All those networks that have to be put back together. Getting to old for this shit though.

The companies with deep pockets can afford to pay.

Sad that a ton of people will be suffering. If they are able bodied therre will be opportunity.

Double time or $20/hr ain't gonna cut it. Who needs 16 hour days? Hope he's happy with his $3K- $4K. Would have to be more than that to get me to go down there. They need him, maybe he'll get more.

The insurance companies are so diverse and there are reinsurance companies. it is very hard to get to the heart of that type of thing. Any regioanl fortune 500 companies down there for a short? But could go long plywood, home depot or something like that.

Ya it would take more than that for me too, but you gotta remember we're talking about someone who normally brings home around 300$/week and he lives on his own and pays all his own bills, he is broke as hell, gotta remember this is someone who lives in a trailor that he paid 4500$ for . 4K$ is what he would normally make in 3 months, he's gonna make that in a couple weeks. He just called again and he is staying in Birmingham until it passes thru. Said even though they are just gonna be sitting there doing nothing in the Hotel room that they are getting paid for no less than 12 hours/day. He's gonna make 500$ the next 2 days just sitting in a hotel room.

Ya my brother has an extremely hard physical labor job, but not only is he getting paid, you know its gotta feel good to actually be able to go down there and help those people out who have just had their lives turned upside down, and to be able to make in a couple weeks what you would make in 3 months has gotta be a big plus too.

Hey man, if you will have contact with your brother while he is there (cell phone etc) drop me an ICQ or something. If he's interested in making a pile of money doing his own thing I might know someone that can help. Will have to see what goes down before they will know if they are going are not but figured I'd throw it out there.

America was built by greedy people. America is run by greedy people.

Good or bad, the depth of this country's greed is what seems to keep us well ahead of the rest of the world.
