				Lens, compression

Lensman, get some mod_gzip or ob_gzhandler turned on this forum to make it faster (dialup) and smaller (save bandwidth).

Will mod_gzip work on dynamically-generated pages like this forum? It helps speed up HTML pages, but I think it's the requests to the MySQL database that is making the board slow...

Jack, yes. Mod_Gzip is an apache module.

Before apache returns the output to the user, its compressed. The standard config is to include html, php, cgi, pl, etc.. and exclude images, videos A dialup user might only need to download 20k instead of 100k, and of course thats 90k less bandwidth for that user, that instance. Mod_Gzip is easy to install.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience how mod_gzip (or any other negotiated content) is affects cached content?

Its only 304 bytes if you look.

I think one of the config options is only if the filesize is at least a certain size first. no sense in compressing 304 bytes. You'll see his front page actually is gzipped http://leknor.com/code/gziped.php?ur...F%2Fleknor.com Here's some info on installing it. http://i4net.tv/marticle/get.php?act...e&articleid=21 and more about where to get it, how it works, etc. http://www.ehyperspace.com/apache/mod_gzip/

Most dialup modems already use compression if they can negotiate it with the ISP host. Compressing small amounts of data like these html pages will not make much difference and the server will have to do the work not your modem.
