I used to have an audio tape of two f16 and 2 f18 departing Tampa Macdill airforce base, south bound for Miami to intercept an in comming lear suspected of having drugs on board.

You can hear the lead pilot saying that they were off, and south bound. Then a senior officer comes on, and says, dont miss this one. The lead pilot returns. We are super sonic and will be there in 3 minutes


Just listening to it gave me chills. I remember hearing some of the fighters leaving the base, and breaking the sound barrier.

Your are wrong. Have been to an air show in Peachtee City, Ga and watched a B1 Lancer break the sound barrier at 50 ft altitude. The vapor cloud could be seen as it approached in the distance.

Strange, when I was at an airshow last the announcer said that planes couldn't break the sound barrier so close to us because the resulting boom would be too loud and cause serious damage.
