My Grandmother

Well, here is an update for those of you who are aware of the situation.

Yesterday we removed the feeding tube and stopped all medications. My Grandmother was released from the hospital about an hour and a half ago. She was transported to my parent's house where she has now come out of the drug induced coma that she has been in since last Friday.

The bad news is that by stopping the medication, the problem will continue to spread further and faster. While on the meds, she was comatose and had less than a 1% chance of recovery and a 0% chance of coming out of the coma. If she were to recover, she would basically be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life.

A few years back she wrote out her wishes as to how the family should proceed under these circumstances. Based on her wishes and the latest diagnoses, she has been taken off the only life support she had (the feeding tube) and moved here to be with the family.

Now that she is awake, everything has been explained to her and although she is not able to talk much, she did nod her head in approval and say "Okay" she also said "glad to be home"

The doctors have given her from 3 to 14 days to live without the life support or meds in place. This was a tough decision for my family to make since they could override Grandma's wishes but nobody would feel right about doing that. At least this way we can all see her awake, and have the chance to tell her goodbye. It is also nice to see that she understands what is going on and appears to approve of the way things are being handled.

Peace

Aaron,
It's really hard and I know how you have been feeling the last few weeks

Just want you to knwo that I'm here to talk to whenever you need it - but you already know that.
We all know you around here as the funny man - but even the Jester has his moments of sadness.

The Truth is right - at least she is happier

On the positive (sorry it's a bad term to use but I don't knowhow else to put it) Your Nanna at leat gets a chance to say good bye this way - rather than just fading out wihtout getting to see you all

I am very sure that your Nanna loves you very much and that the last thing she would want is for you to be sad.
I know that it's hard to fel any other way right now - but at least this way you can all say goodbye and try to make you Nanna as comfortable as possible and be sure that her departure is in the presence of those who really love her - as opposed to the cold heartless hospital.

Unfortuanbtely one of the sad facts of life is that sooner or later all things must pass - but we rememeber the good times and people we love always stay with us in our hearts.

Well know that I am am crying I am gonna just finish up say that as always my prayers and thoughts are with you and yours

Just rmemeber ICQ is only a click away

My heart & condolences go out to you & your family. I lost my grandmother several years ago after she had a series of stroke. She wouldn't stay in a hospital but at least we all got to say goodbye since we all knew she wouldn't make it for very long.

sad to learn it...

i tried several times in the past to bring my mind in the position of people that know they're gonna die the next day or so.....probably someday this simulation will be my reality.

This sounds like a beautiful opportunity to celibrate your grandmother.
We will all mourn her passing, but Aaron you and your entire family get the chance to hold her and tell her how much she is loved, and she can feel that ~ I think we'd all like to feel that from those around us at least once in our lives.

Hey, guys, she's not gone yet! She is happy to be home and around the people she loves.

Aaron, be strong and just know that now and in pasing nothing is more comforting to her than to be around you and the family right now. It might be a little sad, but theres a lot of love going around in that house right now. Hold on to that feeling.

Trust me on this, the same exact thing happened to me.

AaronM, I truly feel for you.
I was a little kid when my Grandma
passed away. Am 57 now and still remember her
just like it was only yesterday and will until
my last breath. She was one great lady.
She was and still is the love of my life.
Good luck and keep your head high.

Sorry I really can't go on any more.

AaronM,

My sincere wishes go out to you and your immediate family. May the love you have for your grandmother provide you with the strength and courage to see yourself through this!

I know it?s tough to go through this situation with anyone that you are close to.

My wife and I had a very similar experience back in the early part of 2000 when my wife?s grandmother passed suddenly!

Spend time with those that you love and let them know how much you love them as one day, you?ll wake up and realize you?re too late!

Aaron, my thuoghts and prayers are with you and yours right now. My grandfather went thru very similar issues. He was dying of cancer and all he wanted to do was go home, so they let him do it. He passed and he did it on his terms so he was at peace with it. The best you can hope for is she hasn't alot of pain to endure now. I know how you feel and you know if you need anything, anything at all, I am here for ya babe........ it's tough I know......... just know you have friends all over the world that are thinking of you at this time in your life.

Sorry to hear this Aaron! My grandmother passed away a few days after the Christmas before last (I think this was a decision on her part) after nearly recovering from a stroke (then the doctors did her in...) I know how emotionally taxing it can be to be on such uncertain ground. Hang in there man and enjoy your time with her while you can!
