should congress investigate football as the cause for todays violent Youth ?

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/...mment-opinions

I'm writing to commend you for calling for a $90-million study on the effects of video games on children, and in particular the courageous stand you have taken in recent weeks against the notorious "Grand Theft Auto" series.

I'd like to draw your attention to another game whose nonstop violence and hostility has captured the attention of millions of kids ? a game that instills aggressive thoughts in the minds of its players, some of whom have gone on to commit real-world acts of violence and sexual assault after playing.

I'm talking, of course, about high school football.

I know a congressional investigation into football won't play so well with those crucial swing voters, but it makes about as much sense as an investigation into the pressing issue that is Xbox and PlayStation 2.

Any game that requires violent physical contact needs an "AO" rating.

At least the kids are getting some exercise.

[rant]
More than I can say about sorry-ass parents who are too lazy to positively interact / participate in their children's' lives.

How about a Congressional Bill outlawing parents from being able to criticize / complain about ANYTHING until they can prove they play an integral role in their child's upbringing.

This is exactly what happens when people stop being accountable for the actions. (Lawsuits, bad parenting skills etc.) Quick to place blame on others (or have them assume responsibility) for their own mental shortcomings, so the fuckers are forced to step-in.

Ultimately you must thank all citizens for allow the governing bodies to get out of hand, as they apparently are.

Hey there Lars,

Just a question. If TV, Movies and Video games do nothing to affect behavior, why do companies spend billions on advertising, and give celebrities millions to endorse products?

If they don't think that a 30 or 60 second commercial can affect peoples behavior, and get them to buy a product, then why do they do it?

Citizens aren't "allowing" government to do this.... they are PUSHING government to do this. Bills are sponsered because the constituants are pushing their representatives to take action on an issue. Lawmakers are responding to what their voters are telling them that they want, they aren't just sitting around trying to come up with this stuff. People lobby them, they call and write, and go to meetings. That is where this stuff comes from

Bullshit....Lars is totally right, in his thought/theory anyway, not that it will ever face anyone, but my gripe....is WE do not put these fuckers in the seat of command....Money does....you think bush would really still be there if kerry didnt care for guns and war....or especially if the bush campaigne didnt leak the rumor of Al'qaida "recommending" kerry for lifes sake....now dont get me wrong....im for neither in particular, but bet me....if the circumstances were different in all the political ploys....kerry would be in office....

i think personally, we need a retro john adams.... a new age revolution....

HOw far over due are we now??? 30 years????

If you look at soccer hooligans in Europe, I would say yes.

The way things are today over there, gangs organise fights at the games which have led to many people being killed or seriously injured.

They disguise themselves as genuine suppporters but are only threre for one reason and thats to instigate violence amongst the crowds, usual law abiding people get mix up in these fights and end up regretting it for the rest of there lives assuming they live through it of course, the guys who started it all vary rarely get arrested or hurt as they step away from the scene once they achieved there objective.

I watched a documentery on it once where a guy went undercover with one of these gangs and once at a game they Dispearse amongst the real fans, once they decide the time is right they contact each other on cell phones and start the trouble, usually by throwing whatever they can at the supporters of the opposite side, sad but true

I blame rap music, not video games.
They say how cool it is to shoot and kill peopel and be "hardcore".
I know a shitload of whites who they are hardcore and gangsta because they attack people and are quik to pull a trigger. They learned all of this from music

Yes, American sports people are too violent.
They should leave it to the fans, works much better that way, and makes for an interesting outing at the game

The difference is high school football games have been around 100+ years. Our grandfathers werent violent because of it and kids today arent. And today they wear more pads in football than they used to.

So what was the reason behind their violence?

I would love to see what happened if they did try it on football, or baseball since your throwing a ball at someone & then if (when) it hits them they attack the person. Or hockey or rugby or basketball etc.. What are all the owners of these teams, all the tv networks etc... going to say/do.
They would never get away with it. They can get away with video games becuase its a smaller scope. I dont think they would ever have the balls to take on sports.

That was a great article though. I mean they could give the news worldwide an AO rating too

I dont believe Lars said anything about getting rid of football or really even investigating any sport, i think his point is that it "makes as much sense"

Oh no, I know, Im just saying also. Just like in the article, they could compare AO ratings to almost anything. Then they want to study it. Too many people want to investigate into too many things that arent really the end of the world, so theres sex in a video game, theres sex on tv. Same for violence etc.. I had heard Ontario canada (im in quebec) was trying to ban movies that have actors smoking etc.. thats crazy.

there is no rash of violence among the youth. the media and the government are lying to you in the name of ratings and good TV. Here is a great article about this. The facts, as published by our government, is that violence among young people is at an all time low.
http://gr.bolt.com/articles/violence/violence.htm

that there is any sudden rash of youth violence is simply wrong.
