Any other PA Dutch folk here?

The funnel cake and Amish thread got me wondering if there are any dutchies (or the variety that actually spell Deutch wrong) here?

Its acutually PA German (PA Deutch) but as with so much American it got redone to be PA Dutch. A lot of the foods are similar to those from the Netherlands too but not exactly.

The Amish are a religious group who live in settlements in 22 states and Ontario, Canada. The oldest group of Old Order Amish, about 16-18,000 people live in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Amish stress humility, family and community, and separation from the world.
Although Lancaster Amish are Pennsylvania Dutch, all Pennsylvania Dutch are not Amish. The Pennsylvania Dutch are natives of Central Pennsylvania, particularly Lancaster and its surrounding counties. Unlike the Amish, they are not all one religion. Instead, their common bond is a mainly German background (Pennsylvania Dutch is actually Pennsylvania Deutsch, or German). They also have Welsh, English, Scottish, Swiss, and French ancestry.

Most Amish are trilingual. They speak a dialect of German called Pennsylvania Dutch at home; they use High German at their worship services; and they learn English at school. They speak English when they deal with anyone who is not Amish. They pronounce Amish with a broad "a" (Ah-mish).
The Amish are a private people who believe God has kept them together despite pressure to change from the modern world. They are not perfect, but they are a strong example of a community that supports and cares for its members. They are a people apart; they are also a people together.

Okay I'm not PA Dutch...

lol...Okay, the Pennsylvania Dutch are Americans (often in PA..hence the title) that have a German heritage or from somewhere that was German speaking such as Switzerland. They came to PA first and then moved around the country but there is still a huge clumping of their decendents in the Bucks, Berks, Montogmery and Lancaster counties (and others) in Pennsylvannia. Some call themselves Pennsylvania German these days but commonly we are called PA Dutch which isn't because we are from the Netherlands but because the word for German is Deutsch it got shortened down and spelled wrong to become 'Dutch'.

I am going to borrow from someone else's website because they said it better:

"Q. Who are the Pennsylvania Dutch?

A. The Pennsylvania Dutch are not even Dutch at all. They are not from the country that we know today as the Netherlands. Some say that the Pennsylvania Dutch should be more properly known as Pennsylvania German. Deutsch means German and the early English in America corrupted the term Deutsch to Dutch. The term German though had a different meaning before 1800. The Germans were not members of a formal country at that time, but were a loose collection of principalities, free cities, protectorates and confederations. The country that we know today as Germany came into being in 1848 with the unification process starting around 1800. German areas before 1800 included areas that are now part of Poland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Russia, France and other areas as well as Germany. A more formal definition of Pennsylvnia Dutch then are those that came to America from those areas where the German language was spoken before 1800. Those that came after 1800 are usually referred to as Pennsylvania Germans or just German imigrants."

There are two types of us - the Plain Dutch and the Gay (insert joke here) Dutch:

"The Plain Dutch include the Mennonites, the Amish, the Brethren, the Moravian, the Dunkard and other Annabaptist and "Plain Dress" sects. Plain people de-emphasize outward adornment. Plain dress is a part of the nonconformity and the separation from the world principle. The Gay Dutch include the Catholics, the Reformed, the Lutheran and other German churches not practicing "plain people" principles."

My grandmother still speaks PA German around the house from time to time and pretty much all the food I grew up on - Shoofly pie, potato candy, funnel cake and something that aren't sweets..lol - comes from that heritage. My people make a lot of quilts too..lol.

Anyway...Dutchie 101 is concluded.
